Recommendation please for 10hp outboard

Would appreciate recommendations for a new 10hp outboard to put on a small rib (3.1m) please. I am thinking power tilt as offered on the Tohatsu 9.8 would be handy, but is that a good engine or would you recomend something else? Thanks.

The Tohatsu is an excellent engine, as is a Yamaha. If you can get a 2 stroke so much the better, still sold new in CIs.

Could recommend Yamaha, as well as Honda. Tohatsu may be excellent, but both the former would have better resale value if you did fancy an upgrade in a couple of years...

I'm not sure I agree with that. If you can get your hands on a Tohatsu 9.8 two stroke, they are like hens teeth over here and consequently have rock-solid residuals. (A 9.8 hp that weighs only 26kg...). I've got one, it's faultless, and I used to use it to push my 3.1 Quicksilver airdeck along - it would plane with two 'big boned' crew on board...

Thanks for the suggestions. I will be buying locally in the UK, so it will have to be the 4 stroke - shame as the weight advantage of the 2 stroke would be great.

From looking at the specs - only seems the Honda and Tohatsu offer power tilt on an engine this size?

I'm sure you know this, but for use on a tender be sure to check the weights. Most 10hp 4-strokes share a chassis with their 8 hp models, so weigh 35-40 kgs, but some share with 15/20 hp, so can weigh in over 50 kgs.

Thanks Nick H - actually, I know very little about this, so that was a very useful pointer! I had noticed that some of the 8HP and 10Hps were the same weight, had not realised sometimes it was the 10HP and 15HP - will pay close attention.

Can you not buy one of these in the CI, keep it in the dealer for a couple of months and then ship it as "second hand"....

I agree that these new 4 strokes whilst nice are blimmin heavy for the power output.

MMmm, you have made a very good point there..I did not appreciate the Tohatsu was a 2 stroke. At 9.8hp & 26kg that would have appeal to many, also being 2 stroke it should be significantly cheaper to buy in the first place.

I had the Tohatsu 2 stroke and echo Jimmy's points, it was very reliable and light, smoked briefly on a cold start, but soon cleared. Now have the Yam 10hp 4 stroke, which is very quite and smooth, but needs a fair old pull to start, a child wouldn't be able to get it going.

Don't underestimate Tohatsu.

All Nissan outboard engines in North America are Tohatsus with a Nissan decal. In 2011, Tohatsu and Evinrude Outboard Motors made a deal to make smaller engines ranging from 15 HP and down with Evinrude decals.

I have the Yam 8hp 2 stroke. It's a good engine other than the cooling waterways silt up and needs regular cleaning out. The 6hp & 8hp are the same unit. The 10hp & 15hp are the same unit.

With reference to weights, this unit is 27Kgs. That was a major factor when considering this motor, but if you need to lift it off the tender, when packing up, it can start to get difficult if the wind has got up. Suddenly 27Kgs feels very heavy, and it can be awkward getting it safely back onto the boat.

You may curse anything heavier than this, but then again, you might have proper davits and not snap davits like me.

I'd get as much power with as little weight as poss :) And that probably means going 2 stroke.

Therefore, if the Tohatsu 9.8 is the same motor as the 15, and 26Kgs, I'd go for the 15, and be smiling well into next week.

I remember being one of JtB's "big boned" crew flying around Dartmouth and can echo his thoughts on this.
