Hi,

I have no way of removing an impeller to inspect it... My screwdriver/pilers removal technic damaged the old one I just replaced.

Any recommendations for a decent one? Do not need a gold plated one as I will only use it once a year (hopefully!)

Thanks in advance.

I used one from my local chandler, but you do need to make sure they are fully tight and they will damage the rubber anyway as you pull, but as you are religiously replacing the one you take out it doesn't matter? Just make sure your screw driver doesn't damage the metal surfaces.....

I’ve been recommended a Martec impeller insertion tool. I’m told that it can be used to extract an impeller easily in a tight location.

It is essentially a tube that fits over an impeller. You lubricate the outside of it, use a turning motion to insert over the impeller inside the pump, and then once inserted you pull straight back on it and the impeller will apparently pull out, without damage.

I can’t vouch that it actually works, as I haven’t used it myself. It seems a little odd that the advertising only mentions insertion, but it was recommended by a very experienced skipper.

I’m watching with interest as I need an impeller puller too. Would this not do the job? Hilka Pro-Craft Reversible Gear Puller 4

Probably, but lets not be daft. Its not got a marine label and costs a reasonable amount.

looking at the ASAP tool linked about, legs of the impeller puller need to be quite thin to fit between the vanes and the feet are quite low profile to fit behind the impeller

I made mine using a pair of cheap long nose pliers, heating the ends and bending them inwards. Excellent for removing the impeller but you will need good access(not possible on some engines) Used on two boats so far, Beta 25 the current engine. Kept in a plastic bag with spare Impeller near the engine.

Sorry, neglected to say this is for volvo 2030... That Yanmar looks like a clever solution.
Sorry for delay in answer it’s not dependent so much on the engine but the impeller which must have a thread cut for the puller to engage
If you can use it it is the perfect answer problem is ensuring that the thread is there

Because I always replace any impeller that I remove I have no compunction in using bent needlenose pliers to remove the old impeller in a flash with, importantly, no damage to the impeller housing. I simply grip the Impeller blades and pull to extract. I then use the cable tie trick to insert the new impeller. Jobs a good ‘un.....

Some new ideas; Based on the claws need to be narrow to fit between vanes and the jaw teeth need to be low profile to fit behind the impeller.

Car relay pilers £10 ebay Nice thin jaws and low profile ends. Some cheaper versions on ebay £7 odd. Difference seems to be if UK or China dispatch.

Ultra thin claw gear puller £21 Amazon; Jaws look quite wide (27mm). Low profile ends (3.6mm)

Thin Claw mini gear extractor £12 Amazon; Jaws look quite wider. Low profile ends (2mm)

Special extra long ultra thing gear puller £25 ebay; Jaws look quite wide. Low profile ends (3mm)

I have a Yanmar 4JH2 DTE, and supposedly that neat tool is for JH series engines, but I have never seen an impeller with an internal screw thread for the large thread to engage with.

Where do you buy the threaded impellers?
