I have a Beneteau 36cc 2001 equipped with a hydraulic steering system and whilst poking about in the location of the steering system, the webasto heater etc, I noticed a very small quantity of straw coloured liquid collected in the bowels of the space. I’m pretty sure it’s not water salt or fresh. It’s possible there’s a very small leak at one end of the steering cylinder - slightly oil to touch.
I’ve had no issues with steering and all continues to feel firm and no spongy feel. However, I’m concerned that this is a leak and that possibly air could gain entry to the system. I’ll check the reservoir level at the pump, that I believe is beneath the pedestal head under the compass binnacle and top up immediately but I need to find a reliable recommended hydraulic marine engineer to sort the leak, check the system thoroughly, bleeding etc.
Although I might normally have a go, with this, I need someone who knows what they’re doing. And it’s linked to a B&G auto pilot, so all has got to work efficiently.
Incidentally what oil should I need to top the system?
