I have a Beneteau 36cc 2001 equipped with a hydraulic steering system and whilst poking about in the location of the steering system, the webasto heater etc, I noticed a very small quantity of straw coloured liquid collected in the bowels of the space. I’m pretty sure it’s not water salt or fresh. It’s possible there’s a very small leak at one end of the steering cylinder - slightly oil to touch.
I’ve had no issues with steering and all continues to feel firm and no spongy feel. However, I’m concerned that this is a leak and that possibly air could gain entry to the system. I’ll check the reservoir level at the pump, that I believe is beneath the pedestal head under the compass binnacle and top up immediately but I need to find a reliable recommended hydraulic marine engineer to sort the leak, check the system thoroughly, bleeding etc.
Although I might normally have a go, with this, I need someone who knows what they’re doing. And it’s linked to a B&G auto pilot, so all has got to work efficiently.
Incidentally what oil should I need to top the system?

Hi,

Hardy Marine Engineers in Burnham used to do hydraulics but I don't know whether that has contnued with John Hardy's retirement. If no manual for the systen came with the boat, I would ask a Beneteau dealer what oil, or better still what make of hydraulic system then find a manual for it.

Peter.

Many thanks. No, no manual as regards the steering system that accompanied the boat, but from what I can see, it’s a simple two line system, with a bypass valve and the auto pilot teed in. Single wheel.
Yes, Ill speak with Foxes Ipswich and run things past them. Good idea. Thank you Peter.
