If you really want to know what's wrong with a boat, rather than getting some soft soap for the insurers, Ian Nicolson is your boy.

If you want someone to travel up from the Glasgow area, then Ian Nicholson would be my second choice after Jim Mcilraith from SurveyOne.

A lot depends on the type of boat, you understanding of its condition and what you want from the survey.

If it is a basic insurance valuation/it won't sink assessment then you don't need to be so picky.

If the boat has been kept locally, have a word with some of the guys in the yard that it has been kept in and you may find out how fastidious the owner has been or if it has had any major issues.

Thanks to those who responded. I may be offering on a boat this week and hopefully requiring a surveyor next week. I'll phone round your suggestions and take it from there.
