Recommend a supplier to make a replacement D cell rechargeable battery pack?

That's a pretty flimsy reason to retain old technology; in any case it's not clear the battery is NiMH or NiCd, if the latter a new charger will be needed anyway.

A quick Google brings up these but depending on how attached to your torch you are, I,d look for a new one with an LED rather than heavy batteries and a power supping incandescent bulb.

1.2V 9000mAh D size NiMH Single Cell Battery with Tags Vapex
I am not one to knock Chinese products but my experience with batteries is that they have no idea or morals as to what AH rating means. I have bought d cells claiming to be 13000 maH to find that they actually have maybe 2 AH.
However Chines Cree flashlights are brilliant and cheap and water proof. Look for 14500 cree flashlight Ebay. But you would need to buy a charger for 14500 (AA sized lithium batteries) The 18650 flashlights have longer life but if they have a charging socket (mini USB) are not water proof. ol'will

If you're keen to save the planet and repurpose your existing torch, then you'll know from your modelling experience that Overlander are probably one of the best examples of businesses excelling at this technology.

Thanks for this. I use Components Shop for model aeroplane battery packs and I’d already noted them. However, I’m not overly keen on rebuilding the pack myself.

It’s a dive torch and proven waterproof to silly depth, unlike a cheap and cheerful LED light selling on eBay.

It makes me incandescent with rage that I’d have to throw away a perfectly good light simply because I can’t put new batteries in it ???

I was looking for recommendations of companies that make a buck out of my reluctance to diy. Google has found one or two but I was hoping for first hand experiences.

Not everything 21st century is worthy of ownership. Somethings are “good enough” and don’t need to be changed.

Greta would be proud of me ?
You might find a replacement led bulb also. I bought one recently for my old long lost petzel headtorch.

I’m not planning to save the planet and I don’t want to repurpose the torch. I simply want to replace worn out rechargeable batteries.

I confess that I do have one model with an electric motor and I hence do have a few LiPos. All of my other models have IC engines.

A LiPo cell is 3.7v so I don’t know how I would get 4.8v.

So far I’ve asked the original supplier of the torch, Sea and Sea and two battery rebuilders but not as yet had any replies. I can find both NiCad and NiMH batteries with tags so, reluctantly, a diy pack is looking likely.

This would make a worthy improvement. Any suggestions for a supplier website?

The torch has two bulbs with different intensities. Turn the switch to the left puts one bulb in circuit, switch to right puts the other. How’s that for technology ?

You got me thinking about replacing my old UK mini Q40 bulb
Q350
They also have this double bulb replacement, which might fit your torch.

Thank you.

I also have a Mini Q40 somewhere, not seen it for years  Mine was attached to a housing and used as a spotter light for my old Nikon 35mm camera to autofocus. Anyone want to buy an obscenely expensive housing, ports plus flashes for a celluloid camera......pretty worthless today

The torch in question has two bulbs with thin wire pin connections, approx 5mm spacing . Nothing immediately jumps out of Google.

Searching LEDs in general, they seem to be either 4.5v or 6.0v. Also need correct polarity. Any issues using 4.8v? Which LED for comparative output to those pictured?

I found mine on Amazon...I identified the bulb type and then just searched on that...it is an old style screw in torch bulb base...works a treat in what was really a crap light originally (I will eventually put the bulb into a petzel zoom head torch that has two bulbs and a switch over switch like yours has,I bought the zoom

Petzel zoom has the that facility also , the smaller bulb is the same as a maglite so i left that as is, the other was originally halogen which
I found by googling the actual type of bulb and the voltage and then arrived at Amazon but I saw cheaper alternatives along the way and some much more expensive options.

One option is to use 4x AA to D cell converters with some decent nimh rechargeables, like Phillips eneloops. The converters are shells that house the AA batteries connected in parallel.

I did the same with arrays of AAAs to make up standby C cells, which we use enough AAAs that it's great to have those on hand by the same token.

I hope that you manage to find an LED replacement.
