Hi all,

I'm taking my RYA SY course at the beginning of March, If possible I'd like to do some light reading on the matter.

I'm aware that reading a book isn't a substitute for real practice and experience :)

Thank you all,

Assuming that RYA SY is the Start Yachting course, this course is designed for absolute beginners to see if they like being on a yacht.

The RYA write their own books for all these courses, the book you most likely need to look at is the RYA Competent Crew course notes: http://www.rya.org.uk/shop/pages/pr...ode=t&cat=&type=BK(RYADefaultCatalog)&course=

It's pictorial, and they are really well written (Competent Crew is the full week long course that start yachting leads to)

Go, enjoy, become hooked!

Malcolm McKeag's "Cruising Crew" covers many of the absolute basics in a readable form. He also covers spinnaker handling which I think is going it a bit and the essential knot to stop ropes running out of blocks.
