Rebuilding my Penta 2002 that wouldn't turn over

840307 is described on the VP site as a "flange bearing" and is "no longer produced". Maybe the new bearing style is what you have to fit?

No progress.
Parts arrived from Marine Parts Europe with wrong bearing in the main bearing kit.
They say they cannot supply the correct kit untill July.
Tried a local Penta agent. Says he can supply but cannot return if same problem occurs unless I wait untill June.
Any one know were I might get the 875750 kit as outlined in the diagram.
The flanged bearing is the old one. The other is as supplied as part of the kit. Obviously not as per the diagram which come from the online penta 2002 parts catalog. Incidential both shells carry the same part number 840307?

Volspec ? They appear to have it

Edit: listed as sellable but not on the shelf ....... same problem I guess wait until July ... Phone them!

The bearings at each end of the crankcase have a built in thrust washer, whereas the bearings that are not at the ends are plain. Sorry I can't help with suggesting any source other than those already mentioned.

Gone with the local Rohales supplier.
Just have to wait and see if he can source it sooner on foot of a confirmed non returnable order. I did specify no deal if wrong axial bearing. Hope it don't end in tears.
Tempted to rebuild with the old main bearings but the axial looks ready to pack up. May go this route if either an ongoing delay or the wrong one arrives in the promised expidited kit.
After all the engine seemed fine before the muck jammed the pistons.

On my engine there is only one bearing with thrust washers at the fly wheel end of the crank shaft.

Maybe the 2001 is slightly different from the 2002, but I seem to recall mine had both bearings with thrust washers (there is no middle bearing on the 2001). Hope you get sorted out. The waiting must be annoying.

Thanks to all who have contributed.
Volspec had the good grace to follow up my concern re the missing flanged bearing and advise Volvo are aware of the issue with the 875750 kit and are working to resolve the matter. No timeline so decision time.
1. Replace with the new Piston Rings and new big ends. Use the old main bearings.
2As above and replace the old mains and chance the flanged bearing.
3 Wait and waste the good weather that just kicked in. 25c yesterday.
Checked the shaft for true in the old main bearings. No deviation or bearing shake either end.
Another option is reuse the old top shells to keep the ware even and rebuild with the new lower oilpan shells as most ware is evident on the oil pan shells, likley due to nature of starting and running load bearing on the lower bearing shells.
Any advice, thoughts welcomed as going to take a weekend break and decide Monday.

Disaster!
Broke the oil sweeper piston ring while trying to fit it into the piston.
Looks like I need to make up a sleeve to compress it before it will go.
New set ordered from Repower at half the cost of original Volvo spares so time to make something up. Wouldn't normaly use cheaper non original spares in critical areas but I reckon the oil ring will be ok below the Volvo compression rings.
On the plus side discovered the valve deterioration is likely caused by gas escape from imperfect seating so have given them a touch up with the fine paste.
Hope to get cracking with the rebuild as soon the new ring set lands here in Puerto Guardamar.

You can get proper piston ring compressor tools, or try the method I used in the rebuild of my 2001, which was to use a large jubilee hose clip. A bit fiddly compared to the correct tool, but it did the trick.

I'm confused.

A piston ring compressor is used to compress the rings into their grooves whilst one slides the piston assembly back into the bore. It sounds like Centaur has broken the ring whilst sliding it over the piston so I'm not sure how a compressor is going to help. For that one needs ring expander pliers which I have seen in a workshop although I've never used them myself .... I've always just jiggled and slid!

4 pieces of thin shim material, couple inches long, half inch wide. Slide ring down the piston over shims and withdraw shims when ring is alligned with groove. Fizy drinks can is good, thin and ready made radius to fit circumference of piston.

Couple of feeler gauges always worked for me:encouragement:

Spot on. The new rings arrived this morning. All fitted handy enough with a good sized jubilie clip.
The replacement oil ring is a single casting without the internal spring but sits in well enough.
Heading home for Easter so will get stuck in beginning of May.
Hope I can rember were all the bits go

Rebuild complete. Looks ok.
Lifted into place and gap has appeared at propeler coupling. Thinking the shaft has pushed back through the packing gland during the relocation.
Any thoughts?
