Bought one from ebay, seemed a good price, when it arrived I thought the threads seemed to have a lot of play in them but the threads looked ok... wrong!! when trying to mate it to my guard rail fitting it stripped the thread from the fitting... not cheap anymore!
Short of buying one from a chandlers where you can play about and examine the item how can you be sure of getting a fit for purpose item?
I am sometimes wary of the “you get what you pay for” maxim having paid ‘top whack’ for substandard products but this certainly seems to support that theory!

Did you buy a metric turnbuckle by any chance? ..

It's quite likely that even with 4mm or 5mm guard wires your swage fittings have 5/16 UNF threads. ..

M8 threads and larger are produced in both coarse and fine pitches (1.25 and 1.00 ISO, respectively, according to Nicholson's Boat Data Book - not sure I even understand what that means!), I don't know if one is in more common usage than the other.
