Real Self Amalgamating Tape ! WHERE ?

Self Amalg Tape, not as I remember it.

I bought this recently ' PSP Self-amalgamating Tape' and using it in 12° winter temperatures.

Do I have to use a blowtorch to get it to amalgamate?

Yes, I know you have to stretch it against itself, but this stuff is a form of electrical Tape pretending to be what it isn't.

Help please .

Some of the best stuff I have got from a chandlery. It was a few years ago though.

Should amalgamate in a few hours. I had some test samples on board from work and the stuff was useless and even after a few months could still be unwrapped.

There are different types of amalgamating tape, for different industries/applications. Amalgamating tape is not one product suits all. For example I understand they make a tape specifically for hockey sticks.

The largest manufacturer in the UK is Scapa, based in Manchester. Scapa specialise in tapes, of all and any description.

Check their website and maybe telephone them if you want more detail - that's why companies have telephone numbers on their websites, have a website and have a technical department. . I note they don't specify 'marine' as a specific application - but then I guess there are many diverse uses covered by specific applications like electrical and... hockey sticks.

If you know anyone who works on BT/Openreach, speak to them and see if they can get you some. I used to get a dark red type that we used on waterproof underground joints and it was fantastic. Amalgamated easily once stretched and had a huge temperature range . AFAIR it was made by SCAPA TAPES as per above post.

The useless tape I had was a bright red colour with a white stripe. Absolutely useless even though it was free ! I believe BT were considering it according to my now deceased Openreach friend. Seems like they got something better !

Looks like the red SA tape is NLA, have moved to a black type. I still have a couple of reels from my days on Openreach that I used for UG cable joints that are still in original packs.

The OP never told us what it was for. There are different types with different characteristics. For example, some stick only to themselves (mast boot tape), and some stick to everything (electrical type for underground).

Yup. I would also like to know what his application is. It might just be the wrong tape. But he's gone.

I have a tape purchased in a chandlery. The last inch tends not to stick. So my solution is to pull it tight & put a turn of insulation tape round it to hold it in place. After 24 hours I can carefully remove the insulating tape & normally all is well.

The application is at the top of the mast which is stored down on the boat.
Amalgamating tape is to seal the ends of mast wiring.

All is outside, where hanging around to see if it really will seal is not an option.

I would think that this screwfix stuff would do the job. https://www.screwfix.com/p/self-ama...mm/2115v#product_additional_details_container. Could always wrap some PVC insulating tape over the top as extra protection.
