Has anyone moored at Reading Festival before and if so, where and was it OK?

I went for the first time lain 2011 (should have started 20 years ago!) and have my ticket for this year but I quite like the idea of having the boat to retire to now and again then to stay over.

Just not sure how safe you are from marauders.....saw 2-3 boats there last summer

I've always wondered boats hardly ever moor along that whole stretch. I assumed that the depth was a bit iffy . Even the rowing events leave a strip between the bank and the lanes, which I assumed meant no depth at all.

For the festival(s) a few WSOBs moor near the entrance - but they do keep close together.

So a sort of mystery.

Anyone know better??

I know there is depth there....that bit's fine. My guess (as a local) is that the area isnt used normally since that bit's remote from anything that you'd visit/drink/ eat at on an overnighter. Also not sure how safe it is at night....

I'm more concerned about damage/uninvited guests from the festival-goers...

:D

probably a silly question, what is an WSOB?

Pipers Island

There used to be moorings behind Piper's Island and all along the little park just down stream.
Don't know about Festival access but I certainly wouldn't leave my boat unattended along the river bank right by the Festival site.

Wrong Sort of Boat. aka LTTT - Long Thin Tinny Thing. Much loved (not) by many vociferous members of these Fora.

Quite often a WSOB is any type of boat that you don't own....

Thanks for the explanation.

i have owned a number of boats over the last 5 decades including a twin engined grp seagoing express cruiser.

my current vessel is a 70 foot narrowboat.
i was not aware that there was a malevolent and petty prejudice against canal craft.

not being able to associate myself with such abysmal and hitlerian principles,i will no longer read or post on this forum.

thank you for the insight.

Please don't do that - too extreme.
I make the allusions regularly, as in the past I commented on this-and-that without declaring what sort of boater I was.

Then someone blew the gaff.

By that time I'd made the point that this forum was / should be inclusive and I think that maybe my sensible comments made folks accept that NBers could be reasonable people.
The main gripe was that being long they take up more space on public moorings than most other craft. Doesn't bother me as we invariably moor well away from other boats - Ugh!

Just for devilment - I occasionally throw the LTTT acronym in to wind folks up (Secretly methinks folks are jealous of wet central heating / wood burning stoves / fridge freezers / baths rather than showers et al).

So do stay, at least to give me some support; NBs are still in a minority amongst the top heavy acres of white.

Sigh.....another NB/ LTTT/ WSOB owner throwing teddies...

'Hitlerian' is actually bordering on offensive IMHO. A smiley could have changed that entirely of course...

That was a concern, Mike for sure.....having said that I was completely taken-aback by the good behaviour at the festival last year: the 90-odd thousand were a mix of middle-agers with regrets (me included) and ZILLIONS of young people just having a fantastic time enjoying the music and atmosphere. No aggression whatsoever despite the volumes of beer that was consumed.

They really were a credit to the younger generation....but I digress :D

The moorings behind Pipers are a great idea...must look into that as they could also be substantially safer from a boat perspective. Also, my neighbour at T&K runs a 'floaty burger boat' round there......i JUST remembered! COuld moor near him for some additional protection perhaps :D

I rarely post here but do drop in from time to time. Firstly I love your Forum name. Secondly I had no idea that TTF was just like the other forums:) It's worse out there believe me, raggie against mobo. Don't even contemplate looking in the Lounge, it's a total nightmare. :)
It does, on the surface, seem a "they are out to get me" place but it's not at all. Hang around, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. It can be fun - honestly :D

So long as you like a bit of banter and have a sense of humour.......

And if you have a 'thing' against rowers you'll probably fit in just fine too

(JOKE!!!......)

At the risk of derailing a good rant, you do realise True Blue owns a Narrow Boat?

I am a little confused as to what kind of boat this Hitler is supposed to have ?

Would have thought noise would have been the primary problem, not just the derivative unoriginal cacophany that masquerades as "music" but the constant comings and going on all night on the river bank ?

Based on last years consumption of beer by us oldies, sleep is guaranteed despite noisy neighbours :-)

Hmmm.... But perhaps a need to pump out first to allow for disposal of processed liquids.....

Interesting thread, I had been toying with the same idea this year, as I saw some people had moored up for the festival last year-for those who know the campsite, near 'white' area-and I thought that would be a welcome change to sleeping in a muddy tent...
However I have a feeling Reading festival is on at the same time as the ATYC rally, and I imagine Ramage would object to me commandeering the boat for that weekend...
