I've just had a PM. Not saying who from. Anyway he was asking me if OLD GUARD was in reference to Dad Army Types.

I said no, I thought Kim meant more as in Cremlin Or SS types.

Questions.

Which is it?

Who are they.

What does one have to do to become one. ( I ask this because some folk appear to become OLD GUARDS Amazingly quickly!!)

Can one avoid becoming an OLD GUARD or is it genetic /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Is there a better terminology??

I think it's more "old fart". But As I've said before, It's just a natural progression, we fall aside to allow new blood and new ideas to emerge, keeps things fresh and new ideas coming, after all, the greatest philosophers were all very young. tells us something, eh?

Nah, surely the Old Guard refers to the old diehards who, for some strange reason seem to believe that

* a chart table is a Good Thing, even on a powerboat
* there are boatbuilders out there who makje better boats than Glastron
* it is just possible to moor a boat without a bowthruster
* if they had a pound for every time they'd seen the diesel v petrol debate they'd have a much bigger boat
* etc etc

Hm. This seems like more navel gazing. The old guard is swapped for a new guard, often every day. So, the new guard from yesterday is already old. Ergo you're the new guard. Well, you were, but now i think you might be old again.

The battle, not the station.

Think I'm right in saying that the Old Guard were the French soldiers who, when surrounded by English troops after having fought valiantly, were invited to surrender with honour. Their response to this was "merde!", thus demonstrating a glorious but ultimately futile failure to accept the inevitable. As this is a quality that applies to every boat owner, particularly in relation to an apparent belief that each repair bill will be the last, obviously everybody on this forum is "Old Guard", non?

its that type of comment which has destroyed the relationship between old hands and others.

Yes i quite aggree, Tripleace,

I wasn't having a Go, at anyone, Just trying to follow the flow of humour on this thread.

I still see myself as a newbie, and have learnt a hell of a lot off this forum, mainly from the 'Old Guards' Of this forum/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

The last comment was meant in jest... And i appolagise if Haydn took offence.
I only said it because ccscott49 had already said it..
