RE \'getting away with murder what would have done?

There is a post below about basically justice and let the punishment fit the crime :

Here is a personal experience

15 September 2006

My House

At approximately 4:25am I awoke to see a man leaving my bedroom.
I immediately got up and followed after him.
As I reached our Family room, I saw him just as he turned off a table lamp next to an open window.
He started to go out the window.
I did not see him have a weapon.
I grabbed him and violently hauled him and threw into the room on the couch (unfortunately not on the hard floor or the wall) and landed on top of him.
As I was about to start pummelling, he said ”Let me go or I cut you”.
I backed off with hands raised and said “ just leave” “ just leave”.
He kept saying ”Let me go or I cut you”.
He had a 15” cutlass in his right hand.
I backed out of the room and he turned the lock button on the door. He left.
I asked my wife (who was helplessly watching all this) to call the police.
Although very upset she called.
The police arrived at 4:50am.
He stole my wife’s mobile phone and /-£20:00(equivalent) from her bag. We have cancelled the number etc.
He was a little under 5’10" and of thin build.
He was wearing dark blue or black clothes.

Would you have grabbed the guy?

What would you have done?

Turns out he was HIV positive.

Two weeks later when spotted in process of a burglary, he shot a policemen (with the other policemen's gun) dead but the policemen he shot managed THANK GOD shot him dead.

I ask again, if you saw the man in your house what would you have done?

Also note that if you killed him you would have had to move as your family and you would always remember the dead body each time you enetered that room.
You weould have to live the resrt of your life knowing you killed somebody

and the way the criminal system works I would still be in costody awaiting trial!!!

I like to have wounded the [--word removed--] so bad that he bled to death (in some oter neighbourhood) while trying to escape.

I don't know what I'd have done, but you and your family are alive; you did the right thing.

Re: RE \'getting away with murder what would have done?

Its one thing for us to speculate on here what we would do, but I imagine in reality at the time it may be quite a different thing.

I think I would have done less than you.... probably nothing. Its only material possessions which can be replaced, life can't.

Re: RE \'getting away with murder what would have done?

I've had a break-in which I heard and went downstairs for. Fortunately he rushed off out of the window he'd just climbed through.

My advice would be to always have a phone to hand and avoid a confrontation, but if I'd had a gun that night I would have killed him without hesitation. As far as using any other kind of weapon goes it's too dicey, there is a very good chance that you will come a cropper.

The situation was a very unusual one, unknown to the burgler. We had taken our first baby son home from hospital for the first time that very day which goes to show that when people go into these situations they don't know what they are walking into.

The low lifes that burgle houses deserve to be shot, unless you have experienced it first hand you cannot comment.

Here we go again...........who needs Touch of Frost when you have this forum to entertain you with crime and justice.

Time to get my wifes' new Cliff Richard Album out of the sail locker again until something relevant turns up on this forum.

Somehow the song "Move It" has more relevance lately when these type of message threads come up.

Re: RE \'getting away with murder what would have done?

Forums change. particularly with such as ybw who have large posting levels. However, over the years, it's become established that many non boaty threads appear, and that's no bad thing.

Lots of non boaty stuff moved to the lounge when it was established. However the forums would be pretty stilted if they were moderated out of existence, which thankfully the ybw team don't do.

If you have an issue with a post, hit the notify moderator button, and let ybw decide, rather than having a mini rant.

Re: RE \'getting away with murder what would have done?

I'll answer your post instead of having a little paddy.
You did the right thing. If you'd got into a struggle and been killed or unknowingly got infected with HIV it wouldn't have helped anyone.
If you'd have seriously wounded or killed him, apart from the trauma, as you say, of the happenings in your home, and being banged up by the police, undoubtedly his low-life friends and family would have victimised you and your family for evermore.
I had a similar, but less frightening, episode when my car was stolen and realised as I was stood bollock naked in the doorway, half asleep, that two blokes who were wide awake with adrenalin running and bloody big screwdrivers in their hands weren't going to be an easy job. Luckily I was too late and they drove off before I made a fatal mistake.

Re: RE \'getting away with murder what would have done?

too many newbies with big ideas about what should or shouldn't happen with forums that have developed into this over years and years of people posting. There are only about 300 posters who keep the whole place glued together, and these muppets come along and tell them they are all wrong.

Now I've got that off my chest, I'll wait for one of the muppets to hit the notify moderator button! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Should get a few old school, clique etc rants going too.

Re: RE \'getting away with murder what would have done?

yaaaaaaawn - I have very very interesting views on Iraq and on Cliff Richard (as well a very very fascinating new interpretation of criminal law) and I don't really care if the oldies are boring either. Just a bit gutted no-one got anything interesting to say about yachts.

What about another internal squabble chaps ?

Re: RE \'getting away with murder what would have done?

Oh it must be awful for you waiting for something to come up about yachts.

Errrm. Why don't you start an interesting yacht based thread?

Or would that be too much trouble?

Re: RE \'getting away with murder what would have done?

There are lots of old posts to go through while you are waiting, nothing much changes. You will also find many like yours complaining about non boating posts, they didn't change anything either.

If you have lots of interesting things to say about sailing, how about starting some threads? I wouldn't bother with your other specialist topics, Iraq has been done to death and I think Cliff Richard is too much of a minority interest to get much response. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: RE \'getting away with murder what would have done?

I sometimes wish this was in the real world and someone new walked into some established pub or club full of regulars and said "Right lads, this place is crap, you're doing it all wrong and I want some changes made - lets have a few of you lot out to make way for us newcomers to begin with. Especially anyone who comes here a lot!" /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
