Re galvanising anchor chain in Spain.

some people reckon you can, but does need a galvanising firm that knows how to do it, as otherwise you end up with chain that is formed in solid rods!

Another problem is that most galvanising companies in UK have a minimum charge. One way around this in UK is to find a firm thatmake trailers, as they frequently send stuff to be galvanised. They will normally include other items at the standard galvanising cost per kg.

I wouldn't bother. Friends of ours got theirs re-galvd somewhere near Almeria (southern Spain) when we were over-wintering one year and the stuff came back so badly done, that we had to resort to hammering the links, foot by foot, until they would move. In addition, the 'manana' attitude prevailed to it's maximum, and the chain was away for over a month!! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Lousy job, though of course there may be better places. As others have said, you need a company that uses a proper 'spinner' (or whatever the tech name is!) that removes the excess zinc and prevents the problem encountered by our friends.

In the end, they (and we) bought brand new chain there at a much lower price than we could have got it in the UK, so I'd have a look at going this route rather than risk a disappointing hassle. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Re galvanising anchor chain in Spain or antwhere else

It's quite possible to galvanise anchor chain, though I am unable to give any addresses except in Cartagena.

Two points to bear in mind:-
1. Not any galvaniser can successfully galvanise chain - they need a proper tank with an agitator. If they don't have that the chain comes back in a welded mass.
2. All galvanisers have a minimum weight threshold, usually at about 200m of 10mm chain (500kg).

These two mean that unless you have a lot of chain to galvanise it's not usually economic unless you can piggy-back on another user.
Chain is cheap in Spain and I'd suspect you'll find that a much more economic alternative.
