Re-fill Camping Gaz 907 bottles.

I have read that it is illegal to DIY refill a gas cylinder of the type intended to be exchanged when empty for a full cylinder.
However Google doesn't appear to find any law against the practice.

Calor bottles are 'rented' and should not be refilled according to the company. Camping Gaz bottles are purchased, so presumably can be used in any way the owner wishes.

The Hartley 32 steel yacht we kept in Wellington Harbour, NZ, for seven years had a bulb keel.

The maker, a very good welder, cut the ends off of six gas cylinders and welded them into a tube. He only cut the bottoms off of the final two, so he got rounded ends. A filler port was incorporated.

The bulb was filled with scrap steel - the centres of washers from a nearby factory - and then welded to the fin.

After that, what can and cant be done with gas cylinders seems an irrelevance..................

It's clearly stated on the campingaz.co.uk, R907 page:
"Additional Features:Gas mix: Butane, propane and isobutane blend"

I thought similar. Having said that, we've filled Campingaz cylinders with propane, butane and on rare occasions we've even had the local campingaz rep give us a replacement with whatever it should be; both the cylinder and the stove coped contendly with all three.

Exactly! A truism I use often is "True knowlege is the product of direct experience!"

All my marine stoves have worked very well on both propabe and butane, and, in the case of Gaz cylinders so filled, with a mixture. Self fill cylinders use Autogas.

The only time I had a problem was in deepest darkest rural Slovakia. One of my fellow racers left the gas cylinder on while we were brewing up in a picnic spot. The cooker valve must have been on a tad and the cylinder emptied. All this happened outside, so no danger in the race truck. We never used it inside, due to the proximity of the race fuel and bikes.

A Track Official - the Interpreter - took it away and brought it back full. Too full - liquid gas squirted out of the connecting pipe as it was fitted to the 907 bottle.

It was so cheap compared to what we paid in the UK, about two quid, that I forgave the error!

Aren’t the centres of washers just fresh air?

I seem to end up with quite a few 13kg cylinders. My lead melting pot is one...Heated by a central heating burner.

In Stingo's patch, Faro lagoon, It was usual to take your Calor cylinders to the local gas distribution place and get them refilled. They would refill any cylinder and it was very cheap. Think that was because it was essential for cooking by the locals.. Quite a difference when we relocated to France, bottled gas prices were quite a bit more. Camping Gaz, a LOT more. I refill from the Carrefour standard Butane ones with a DIY connection. IIRR, the Carrefour 13kg is 35 euro exchange. If you want an extra one, 5 euro deposit. Makes Camping Gaz look a bit rapacious...
