Hi this is my first post so please bear with me ............

Does anyone have experience of interfacing a Raymarine A50 plotter with the ST60 wind unit, via a seatalk to nmea converter. I have this interface working with depth and speed but no wind data appears on the A50

The old raymarine seatalk to nmea converter that I have out puts VWR sentences which I, now know won't work with the A50. I have found specifications on the internet that suggest the A50 will accept MVW sentences. I also found a specification to suggest the newer E85001 outputs MVW sentences from seatalk wind data input, and just wondered if any one could confirm this.

For info the nmea data stream into euronav seapro shows all the data including wind and AIS - my netbook is of course at the chart table and the plotter is at the wheel :)

Many thanks to any help that can be offered.

You sure the A50 chart plotter displays wind ;) You should have a wind indicator head unit as well as the depth and speed display unit . The A50 does not need any information from other units as it calculates what it needs . COG SOG etc . It sends NMEA sentences to Autopilot .

Thanks for that I have been in contact with Raymarine and, whilst helpful, they simply advised to use seatalking and to buy some more kit. I am going to test the a50 with a nmea simulator at the weekend, what I cant test is the out put of a new E85001 my older one does not out put MVW sentences but I think the newer ones do. Thanks for the responses.

Suppose it depends what wind you're after . If you have a mast head unit and want to display wind data then Raymarine are correct and you need a WIND Instrument to add to your collection . The WIND refered to in the online manual is NOT from a mast head unit .. :rolleyes: Perhaps you need to READ the manual rather than assume that it will .....

MWVWind Speed and Angle 1 23 45 | || || $--MWV,x.x,a,x.x,a*hh 1) Wind Angle, 0 to 360 degrees
2) Reference, R = Relative, T = True
3) Wind Speed
4) Wind Speed Units, K/M/N
5) Status, A = Data Valid
6) Checksum

The above data does not come from the masthead unit it comes from the WIND Instrument and is then available on the Seatalk Network

You say you have a ST60 Wind Speed Unit so what do you use to display the Speed and Depth . You should have TWO small data heads . One for WIND one for DEPTH/SPEED and a CHARTPLOTTER

..

:eek: :eek: :eek: :rolleyes: :rolleyes: :rolleyes: :D :D ;) ;)
