How much is a new engine? How important is water pump?

I tried to do it cheaply, and regret it. I was lucky.

I'm all for DIY, however a new pump has probably given my engine another 10 years.
And how is replacing the non stainless steel spring nitrile supplied seals in the pump that have failed with SS identical ones and replacement spec bearings, ‘doing it cheaply’?
The pump housings are bomb proof, just the seals and bearings ever fail.
I don’t do ‘cheap’ repairs.

Sheesh..

local machinist that rebuilt my yanmar gm2f pump (that failed again after 4yrs and 100h this summer with a damaged/ grooved axle - on a generator) explained that when there are no ss spring nitrile seals available around, he removes the spring (which will fail soon anyway!) and replaces it with suitably sized o-ring to keep the seal on the shaft.
anyone know/done so?

V.
