Ramsgate

NAVIGATING THE HARBOUR APPROACH

The approach to Ramsgate harbour is from the East via a well marked buoyed channel, there is a yacht tract to the south of the port hand buoys with a holding ground to the south breakwater if you need to wait before you can enter the harbour.

The tide sets across the harbour entrance in a NE'ly/SW'ly direction, with the north going tide running from about 1½ hours to HW to 4 hours after HW.

ENTRY AND EXIT PROCEDURES
Ramsgate Port Control should be contacted on VHF Ch.14 on approaching and before leaving the port. Ramsgate Marina staff and the Dock Office(for berthing information) may be contacted on VHF Ch.80 whilst in the Royal Harbour. Signal Lights on the East Pier Control movements in and Out of the Royal Harbour and in the Approach Channel. Signal lights at the Dock Office control movement in and out of the Inner Marina.

THREE VERTICAL RED LIGHTS - Indicate that a vessel may not enter the approach channel or the inner marina, or leave the outer harbour.

THREE VERTICAL GREEN LIGHTS - Indicate that a vessel may enter the approach channel or the inner marina, or leave the inner marina or the outer harbour.

FLASHING ORANGE LIGHT Indicates a ferry movement in progress, no vessel should enter the approach channel or leave the Royal Harbour. FREQUENT MOVEMENTS OF LARGE VESSELS TAKE PLACE AND SMALL CRAFT ARE ADVISED TO KEEP WELL CLEAR OF SUCH TRAFFIC.

INNER MARINA - The gate is open for approximately 2 hours either side of high water (subject to height of tide). A red and yellow flag by day and a single green light by night indicate that the gate is open.

There ya go, probably very quite compared with what you are used to Julie, no need to mention the Goodwins, sure you've got it covered. The entrance has recently been dredged but if its low water stay next to the wall on the port side as you go into the harbour proper, and do it slowly as you can't see round the corner. Visitors berths are on the left as you go in. The inner harbour is straight ahead.

Just to avoid confusion there is another set of breakwaters outside this on the left side.

Its ok round the berths but not in the centre as fishing and pilot boats are constantly on the move. For general slow stuff the outer part would be good but let the port control know as thats where the ferries go.
For other stuff anywhere outside is fine, just watch out for pots if you are close to shore, would suggest turning N or NE to do higher speed stuff as it keeps you away from the sands.

Check to see if it is Ramsgate week sailing regatta as well.

I know that it is either on now or very soon.

Just means that until about 10:00 all competitors boats will be in outer harbour with lots of people running around. Once they have gone then you will have a quiet place in which to practice.

If you see a white Hunter Impala called Beeste or a Westerly called TS Leopald Muller then give them a shout as they are my friends.

Also go and watch some of the racing with your clients.... Get near the start for the fun then dash to the first windward mark to see the crashing.

Enjoy.

One tip here dont moor up on the west side near the fishing berths (its the long pontoon) as its covered in bird sh11t and has no power or water!

Also port control can be a pain and not bother to answer the radio if the lights are green. I've seen ferries move around whilst those lights are green so port control can make mistakes!

Marina Office and Fuel barge are on channel 80 and the port control and dock office (inner dock only open to us residents) on channel 14.

good luck..

Ramsgate week starts on this saturday so expect it to be busy!

Come on! I thought you are suppossed to be a Yachtmaster Instructor!! You should be able to navigate into any harbour, surely? Use the almanac!! Dear Oh Dear!!

I don't think I could have been more wrong when I said that I thought you would find it a bit quite! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
