Ramsgate, It's the Dogs . .

Reading all this has brought back memories of Ostend...:D...really ropey and common.
Sometimes grotty places can be fun if only briefly..:D..you just have to accept and not get contradictory to the spirit of things...after all none of these are permanent...:D

Words of praise

I may be bias, I live in Broadstairs next to Ramsgate but try to stay on board at least once a month, I keep my boat in the Inner Harbour. The rule about dogs has been relaxed slightly, you can walk round the Harbour with them on a lead, but living with them on board is a No No. As for the showers and other facilities I use them regularly and have never had a problem, nice and clean with gallons of hot water - I'm referring to the new block at the western end by the crosswall.

Agree that entering at Spring L/W can be challenging, but that is not a reason not to pay the harbour a visit, and the Royal Temple Yacht Club is really friendly to all visiting sailors.

Happy Sailing

David

Gentlemen, what is this ?!!!!

Ramsgate bashing now is it? They say a majority grows because people can't think for themselves and subsequently agree with the majority....... i am not too bothered if I don't fit in with this!

I love Ramsgate. A proper seaside town, sandy beaches, pretty harbour and great stop off before a trip across the channel. OK the marina facilities could do with a little TLC, but the dredging issue is getting better slowly and staff friendly in my experience.

Or we could all slag it off and make sure it fails.... where else are you going on the North Kent Coast?

+1

Stayed there in July and found it OK. A bit crowded with all the windfarm installation / maintenance boats, but otherwise enjoyed it. Will be going back next year....

Is there still a dredging problem there ?
I remember when Edward Heath went aground there with Morning Cloud yonks ago...
...Gosh ! I must be getting old ! :D

We were there earlier in the year, and I quite liked the place.
Good food in the Italian near the YC, beach nearby. The Sailor's church was v.spooky.

The main downside was the swell on the second night which just happened to be in the wrong direction.

Understand all this but given that the place becomes grossly overcrowded at times during the season I very much doubt that Ramsgate is going to fail because of the mixed reviews on this thread.

Ramsgate has it good points and I do like the place but as a marina it also has it's drawbacks, especially when compared with its nearest neighbour, and I think it is reasonable for posters to mention them.

If visitors numbers declined due to people staying away, just maybe it would be an incentive for somebody to find out why and try and address the reasons?

I have not been to Ramsgate for many years but remember it as being a nice town with a welcoming attitude.

It certainly is a bit jaded, as are many seaside towns of the same era. It has a certain charm for that though.

Last time I was there I left the boat for a while, then drove and left the car for a while. Car had been walloped in the car park when I collected it.

A note and a call arrived from the culprit, who was most apologetic. I'd fixed it by then and he was happy, at my suggestion, to send the repair cost to the RNLI.

Welcoming and honest I think.

Hm. Once left the boat in Ramsgate at the beginning of the season. Some silly b*gg*r ties up next to me, lines too slack, fenders pop out, and his aluminium toe rail graunches my gelcoat (oh, and he broke my AIS aerial whilst he was at it).

Marina reluctant to give me details ['Data Protection, sir!'] but eventually give me a mobile number. I ring him, tell him what happened, and he tells me my lines were too slack.

'Not what the photographs show.'
'What photographs?'
'The ones taken by the marina staff.'
'Oh ...'

Silence as he hangs up ...

I like both Dover and Ramsgate and, come to that, Calaise and Oostend. I'm not keen on Burnham or Shotley. Not because they don't have good facilities but because so far as I am concerned, a marina is just somewhere safe to leave the boat while I go do something else, which the first four have but the last two don't. Something else, I mean.

I like the marina at Ipswich for the same reason.

I liked Ramsgate. We stayed there for a few days and the marina staff were pleasant and helpful. My husband asked a chap pottering about on his boat where we could get some diesel. We always buy from a garage. This chap drove my husband to the garage and brought him and the diesel back. How friendly was that?

They do have a policy about not allowing dogs in the marina. However, if you're visiting and have a dog they turn a blind eye so long as you're discreet. We always, always, clean up after our dog, as many dog owners do. Regretably it is the few who don't, who give dog owners a bad name.

Entry at Ramsgate's always been somewhat 'challenging' - part of the attraction :D:D

What other marina has it's own private beach at LW?

I didn't think leaving a green buoy to starboard would challenge anyone!

My daughter knows this patch of sand as 'fairy island'

The photo is a little deceptive, and the comment of 'dumbass' rather unjustified if you didn't know the entrance particularly well. Most on here know well that you can happily end up on that bank even if leaving the green to std (on the way in).

I think that picture has come from sailing anarchy, I would give it a miss if you are easily offended................

That picture is a true and accurate relection of the state under the race box.

It is less than 20 years when I was aboard a Polish tall ship parked on that wall.

Enough Ramsgate bashing me thinks, every place has its down sides, I always hate the thought of having to go to ramsgate because of weather but whenever we are there we enjoy the stay, the club is great, Waitrose within walking distance, breakfast in the cafe under the arch and if your really lucky you may get to sit next the guy who played 'Jim Carver' in the Bill :)
Have you not tried the Belgian Cafe?
