Ramsgate . . .the dogs?
We've just finished a four year stint down there in the outer western harbour during which time the no no dogs rule was introduced. Latterly we used to take poochy along with us without any eyebrows being raised - possibly a symptom of being council run with apathetic and indifferent staff mind you.

If marina owners get hold of either Ramsgate or Dover the prices are going to skyrocket.
Maybe rich snotty yotties would be happy to pay more for a soul-less bar etc 'on site' and all the other things that come with an MDL marina, but I wouldn't!
I'm happy to pay less, walk a bit and see the places, not just the marina bar.
The only hassel I've had in either wasn't the staff, who I've always found fine, but some of the snotty yachties. On bloke with an Island Packet was most snooty and upset when we asked permission to raft alongside when the harbour master told us to. Takes all sorts, I suppose.

That argument doesn't hold any water Duncan.... Ramsgate is already no different price wise to any of the commercial marinas around....

Right, now I have your full, undivided attention!
I was born in Dover, although only in the Hospital there, my parents lived in Deal, half way between Dover and Ramsgate I was raised there (Deal) and went to school in Dover, I cycled all over the area as a child and visit both regularly, even though I currently reside in Humberside.
My yacht is moored in Dover and has been since I moved her up from the piles in the Hamble, we are in the Wellington dock.
I have stoped going in to Ramsgate because I value my keel, it comes in handy (know what I mean). Ramsgate is Council run, and frankly it shows, bless 'em!
Dover has many attractive features for the visitor, not least the most amazing castle, the War Rooms, the Grand Shaft, Dover Fort, Langdon CLiffs and Nature Reserve, Samphire Ho, St. Margarts Bay, and is a mere 12 minutes drive from Deal or Folkestone, both of whch also have many endearing features and places of interest.
Nights out, admittedly are not so pleasant unless you are willing to travel out of Dover, in which case you are spoilt for choice, if money is not an issue may I recommend Wallets Court a St. Margarets (wallet and Amex very much needed) or Folkestone where you really are spoilt for choice, or simply fish and chips in Dover if you're on a budget.
Dover has indeed suffered a decline over the past 10-15 years and s a victim of it's own success, regularly grid-locked with freight traffic from the docks it is not a pleasant place to be some times, but where isn't these days?
Ramsgate, I won't knock it, but it suffers remarkably similar problems to Dover, they are both "used" by a passing through traffic relentless stream of trucks and caravans, none of whom spend one cent in either of their temporary host towns, how very very sad.
Many yachties call in at Dover, and very few are disappointed, if you are ever around, please feel free to look me up, I'm on H64 in the Wllington aboard the good ship Sulac, a Moody 30, I get down most weekends and I would welcome the company and a glass of red is always available.
Dover......I love it really.

Had a great night out in Dover. Pub/bistro not far from the marina (also home of a newish yacht club?). Good pub food and a great band of session men who could do just about any rock song of the last 40 years better than the original.

I have to admit my perception of the town of Dover (rather than the marina which is sheltered, well run and often cheaper than Ramsgate) is coloured by having spent too much time there while weather bound. In particualr the walk into town from the marina across the busy dual carriageway does start to grate after a while.
Sometimes this extract from Frank Cowper's Sailing Tours describes things all too accurately even 100 years on!

Yep, I heard that too. I was told by someone on the local council (who own the harbour) a long time ago that they were looking at lifting the ban. I'll find out what's proposed tomorrow and report back.

I can confirm that the local Council have decided to get the pets ban lifted. Will take a while as it's a by-law and needs an Act of Parliament to get it lifted.

You what? Is this for real or are you 'avin a giraffe? An Act of Parliament to get a bleedin' dog ban lifted! Good god - where on Earth is this country at? Is this something to do with the 'Royal' nonsense in the harbour's name?

The Kent on Sunday newspaper states " The by-law removal process is expected to take between three and six months "
