Just a quick bump-up on this event!

Are we still on for 10/11 May then? /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Most definately and don't forget you can arrive the week before and leave your boat for the week after.

Re: Ouch

We are looking forward to it. I now need to figure out journey time from Staines, might it help if I post an estimate up from our end for locks etc, or does someone who knows what they are doing have a clearer view /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif ?

Staines to here can easy be done in two full days. I have at a push done here to Kingston in two days and that was single handed with my Princess 435 and it always takes longer when you are alone. I must say though that was exhausting.

Re: Ouch

I am still planning to come. Waiting for the boat to get back from the boatyard first though. How long do you think it will take from Harleyford to byron's?

One hard day. 1½ hours - H'ford to Henley. 5 hours Henley to Ashmount.

I need to get used to timings on the river. Everything takes a bit longer than you think doesn't it?

[/ QUOTE ]

A good rule of thumb is to add the number of locks on a passage to the distance in miles and divide by 4.

So, 20 miles plus 6 locks = 26/4 = 6.5 hours

Amazing how reliable it turns out to be !

My timings are a bit rough as I tend to start early and finish early. This way I think I avoid jams and always find a nice mooring but yes, it's somewhat galling when it takes me 5 hours from here to Henley and the same time from St Kats to Ramsgate. Or Ramsgate-Dunkirk in 1hr 35 mins.

I always tell the crew that it's not about getting somewhere, it's about being somewhere

Re: Ouch

Still planning to visit you. Leave two weeks today.

My passage plan, leave Poole by 12:30 bridge on Thurs 1st May. Just Cowes that night, an easy run.

2nd May Cowes to Brighton. Not too far.

3rd May Brighton to Ramsgate, a fair run and early start to get tide at Ramsgate.

4th May Rmasgate to St Kats. A good run and early start again.

5th May up on non tidal river.

5th to 9th gentle run up river. Trying not to break speed limilts. Is it right I have to stay under 30 knots???? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Well under I guess!!!

Havn't worked out getting back yet!

Just hope for weather, don't fancy pushing nearly 200 miles up channel in the rough stuff. But it will be great fun if it all comes together.

Re: Ouch

I did this trip couple of years back from the Thames, Limehouse to Ramsgate 4 hrs, Ramsgate to Brighton 5hrs, Brighton to Poole 5 hrs and returned via Dover, its fairly straight forward. Planning to go round in July for 5 weeks this year before the diesel prices make unviable. Look forward to seeing you at Byrons /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Best slow down for the locks though /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Re: Ouch

Thanks for all your good wishes. This weather has got ot improve soon hasn't it. Still I reckon if it's grim now come May, by the law of averages, it's got to get better.

Got a train ticket from Reading to Bournemouth, don't want to leave car in Poole. £8 from Mr Branson, not bad. A mate going to pick me up in Bournemouth. Hiya Bob.

Got to get some mooring pins, not used to tying up to bank, pop down to Sheriden at Moulsford, they should have some. Can't think of much else I'll need.

Just been in loft to get my Nicholson's Guide to the Thames. Published in 1969, main features can't have changed much. Doesn't show barrier, but I think I know about that.

Re: Ouch

The weather is changing for next weekend.
That's a good price for the train ticket.
Sheridan's have some good pins and probably the main difference to the old Nicholson's is that the lock lay-bys have changed sides in some places. Otherwise the Thames still roughly goes West - East. Although I think at Byrons it's North-South!

Re: Ouch

My daughter looks like she will be in a performance at Wycombe on the Saturday night. Looks like this could get in the way of me making the Rally.

Re: Ouch

Thank you Mike. I suppose you have my details from an MDL data base, that's fine, I'll look forward to the map.

I forgotten Chatham was MDL, might make calling in more worthwhile.

I shall certainly make sure you see me cruise at the appropriate speed, just in case you were wondering, my comments re 30 knots were tongue in cheek /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Mind you, may be a way of getting past the unmanned locks. Sorry, tongue in cheek again. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
