Its a strange design indeed. The hull is reminiscent of American style GOM / Mississippi Delta oil rig supply ships; stretched tugs where the back deck was lengthened for cargo handling. It also looks like a Great Lakes ship from the bow at least. It doesnt look like a very hydrodynamic shape for bashing to windward but apparently it is a very energy efficient hull. However, the latest seismic ships, designed to minimise noise (wasted energy) have bows that are very similar.
