Am looking for a radio I can use with an iPad gps nav system.
Any ideas? We are going to buy a nav X app for the iPad or android and want to be able to use them together with the radio.

Can you elaborate a bit about what you have in mind? There are things that can be done but they may not be what you want.

To give you an idea I can describe what I have. I've a VHF DSC radio that also picks up AIS traffic. It needs a GPS position (some others have internal GPSes) so I feed that in using NMEA0183 protocol. It outputs AIS data and also other data (associated with Maydays and other DSC functions like position reports). That's two separate NMEA0183 outputs.

I also have other instrumentation and an autopilot that use either NMEA0183 or NMEA2000. I use a ShipModul Multiplexer to bring all the traffic together and route it.

That multiplexer also gives me NMEA 0183 output over USB (and other variants of it can give NMEA output over WiFi but I use another box for WiFi which I wouldn't really recommend to others).

I feed that USB/WiFi output to a Windows tablet running OpenCPN. So that will display the positions of ships transmitting AIS and will also show the position of a Mayday. Substitute iPad/ Nav X for that and that is an example of what can be done.

Some Android devices have a radio chip built in, but you do need to plug your headphones in to act as an antenna. The reception is OK, but they only have FM, AM if you are lucky.
