Radio Operators Certificate

Hello Nigel,

Assuming that it is a VHF Restricted Op Cert. you will be able to get a duplicate by contacting the RYA on 02380 627 400, it will probably cost you but I have to admit to never having bothered to find out as I have never lost mine.

If it is anything beyond VHF operation you will need to contact the MCA on 02380 329 100.

I hope that this helps.

Mine was issued by MRSD back in 81 before RYA took over, how would I get a duplicate if lost? Mine is safe, but I have a friend who's lost his and reckons he can't get a duplicate.

Can the exam be done by post?

The reason I ask is that courses and exams only seem to be offered in the evenings and at weekends, which is no use to anybody who only works in the evenings and at weekends.

If they want you to have a licence, which is pointless without the certificate as you're not licensed to use the radio even though you have a licence, surely they have to make it possible for everybody to take a course.

For the past several years I have had to work on the two weekends a year courses are run in my area, which is why I don't have a VHF, although I do have an antenna, just to p*** off the inspectors.

The whole thing seems to be on shakey ground!
Course prices varying from £29 (local education night school) to £70 (Local diving school), and it seems several prices in between.
The RYA (yes I am a member!), are promoting these schools/courses on their web sight; and IMHO should take responsiblity for policing the scheme and stop the rampant rip-offs.
