Radio Certificate of Competence

All these dire threats of ginormous fines made me look for my training course certificate. (license fully paid up etc, etc)

Nothing in sight.

Would any kind person enlighten me as to what it looks like, size general description would be nice.

How and where do I get a duplicate from?

My best recollection, since ours are probably in the chart table some 70 miles away, is that it's an A4 sheet which folds up to to a D5? (envelope size) in a clear plastic folder, showing your piccie.

But why don't you just ignore the regulators anyway ? As someone pointed out in a long thread on the Liveaboard forum they have to catch you on your boat transmitting. It's just another way for HMG to regulate us and charge us for the privelege IMHO. After all how hard is it to use a VHF ?

The look of the cert, really depends on how long ago you done the course.

hmmm well whilst not disagreeing with your anti regulation sentiments, I would point you in the direction of the solent on any sunny Sunday as an example as how seemingly difficult using vhf is.
At least the vhf course and exam teach people how they should be using vhf.

It was a long while ago, but I well remember the instructor on my original vhf course telling us all to go away and "use it or lose it". Could be the reason for the incessant radio checks. Our DSC instructor just wished us the best of luck!

I took my test in March 2001 - if my records are correct.

I suspect that the examiner took my pic: and promised to forward the document when it had been stamped or whatever.

I have no idea whether the RYA keep records of successful (all?) candidates, if so you should be able to obtain a replacement. I wouldn't like to pin a lot of hope on it though.

I know we were all warned to ensure that we kept our shorebased nav course certs safe, cos there would be no chance of a replacement.

All well and done; But -

I've done the course and paid my money and want my bit of paper.

Mike Martin on hundred of other threads is saying his new broom (OFCOM vs RA) is treating not cert as an invalidation of license (I think he's wrong; it's a breach of "warranty" not a breach of "condition", but then I'm not a lawyer).

The RA's approach was "that the license is important, but cert isn't - provided that you are sensible in the use of the kit" OfCom seems to be tightening up now.

Having done the business it makes sense to have the proof.

Thanks for the feedback anyway, I'll go and look at my bumph again, but I'm sure I haven't got one.

Now, where do I get a refresh, anyone?

OK the cert will be A5 folded along the long side to form a booklet. The cover will be Green supplied with a plastic wallet. On the inside will be you "mug shot!" on the left along with your address. The right hand side will have a description of you ie hight etc.

I keep records of my students, I undertsand the RYA do also when they issue certs.

My sincere apologies to the RYA for doubting their efficiency. I wonder whether a similar service is now available with the shorebased course certificates, they didn't keep a central register at one time.

How many times do you hear ' over & out' O.K. for John Wayne in W II films . The whole idea of the course is that everybody transmits in the same manner. So the Coast Guards know what is comming next. Trouble is that people do not listern. How many times in the Solent do you hear radio checks on ch. 16 When at least X to the power of n you are requested to use ch 67. Its no wonder that they get annoyed-who can blame them.

Once you get your replacement you could do what I did - scan and print out a "duplicate" then laminate the duplicate and keep the "duplicate" onboard while the original is safely tucked away with the other important papers at home - dog licence, wife licence, copy of house deeds, SSR papers, berthing receipt for this season etc.

Unless they have changed the regs (jump in here Mike) it is my understanding that if they come aboard turn your radio on and tramsmit from it then all the licencing laws apply.

Thanks for all your help and advice guys,

Having established that I didn't have anything matching the descriptions (Tekkie, Cliff), I emailed RYA last night and received a reply at 11 ack emma this morning - pretty efficient I'd say.

They'll send me a replacement on receipt of mug shot and information - assumed f.o.c. as no money was mentioned. Mine was a shore based course, so they must keep a record now.
