Hello
After adding an AIS transponder to my boat navigations systems I had to change the NMEA interface for my chart plotter from 4800 to 38400 baud.
This resulted in my radio no longer being able to collect the GPS position from the system because the radio does not support this baud rate.
A search on this and other forums, suggested the usual fix for this issue is to either add a new GPS receiver, replace the radio for a unit that supports the required baud (if one can be found), or leave in my old AIS receiver only, add a new antennae and set this unit to the baud for my radio.
All of the above solutions seemed to be either more expensive or more work than what should be required for such a small issue.
Instead I developed a small unit that can connect to the NMEA 38400 bus, collect the location from the data and transmit it to the radio on NMEA 4800. In effect it is an NMEA 38400 to NMEA 4800 adapter, but it only sends data specific to the GPS location of the boat (NMEA RMC sentences).
I can build and sell these on for £30. If you might be interested in one please let me know, if there is enough interest I will build a few and list them on eBay.
