I need to replace my Raytheon 50004 scanner as it has recently been damaged. (subject to insurance claim by third party). My current display is a Raytheon R10x , which as far as I am aware is compatible with the Raymarine Pathfinder scanners (I'm waiting for confirmation of this from Raymarine) Would there be much benefit in upgrading the displa at the same time? I'm not particularly interested in interfacing electronics and found my existing unit perfectly suitable for my needs. What would be the advantage of an upgrade??

I have Raymarine SL-72 with no fancy NMEA interfacing, just wire from autopilot's "computer".

When not in use as a radar (i.e. 95% of the time) the monitor acts as a very useful "Multi" display, giving wind speed and direction, tide rate and direction, SOG, COG, etc.

When in use as a radar, because it picks up info from the GPS, the waypoint is displayed on screen and the display can do North up or Course up.

To my mind, well worth linking to the other instruments, and I am not disappointed that I fitted a mono display.

I would have thought that if you have a chance to upgrade`equipment, you should. If you connect non-original equipment and later have any sort of problems, you will very likely have greater trouble in getting it sorted. IMHO only of course /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I think you would be much better off going for a complete SL72+ package than messing about trying to replace your old scanner.
The R10X was made by JRC for raytheon, and having been in this situation myself a couple of years back found there were no spares for them at all at that time.
Also if I remember rightly, the pin configuration on the scanner plug is different on the modern radars.
There is a chap called John Holmes who has a stand at the Boat Jumbles who may be able to help you. He specialises in S/H radar.
He's usually at the Malvern Jumble...(end of Feb)...but compass events may be able to give you his number.
Steve.
