Hello,
I have just come across to the darker side after having a sailing boat for 15 years. Wife and family are very happy I made the change and have me passage planning well into the Summer. We have bought a Fairline Corniche with 2x200 hp volvo's with shafts. Engines have 600 hrs each so quite sweet still.
I wondered if anyone was an authority on the dangers of having the radome at head height. Ours is bang on head height when standing on the fly bridge which we do sometimes. Its been many many years since I took my RYA radar course and cannot find my notes (I am sure it was mentioned) although Im not sure if the tutor saying we would grow an extra ear was a joke?
I think the Corniche was fitted with the radome in this position from new but then perhaps advise has changed since 1989. I have a mountain of stainless tube and bender so If it comes to it I can lift it up a foot or so but curious if anyone has any information on this?

Cheers, Colin

You absolutely must not stand in front of a radome when it is on. You need to be at least three or four metres in front of it if you have be there at all. I attended the RYA radar course only last Sunday and the trainer was very specific about this. In fact he is a Raymarine tester and told us about a person who has two hearing aids and walked in front of a radome and both hearing aids were cream crackered, which makes you think about what it does to brain cells.

the normal accepted safe rf power density is anything below 100w/m2. on your typical 2kw pulsed radar, thats 0.5m away. for a 4k pulsed radar its 0.9m. if you're taking broadband/fmcw - you can cuddle the thing - its no worse than a mobile phone.
