I have had the oppertunity to accure a Raymarine RL70 Chart plotter radar second hand.
We will be doing a few night passages but mostly day passages
What is the fog like on the Spanish / French boarder med side
would it be worth investing in radar what's this unit like

yes, its either blowly like a loonie, or it can be eerily calm and foggy in golfe de Lion, and i came out of marseilles harbour on radar only in august once. Of course, if you plan night passages, then radar is almost a must-have. For familiarity, i turn the thing on for every trip, so i can check visible things are on radar screen.

duno bout the actual raym. unit. Most stuff these days is somewhere between "decent gear" and "fabulous". Even the low quality radar shows everything - no real beneft of the blob being in colour.

I've got the Colour radar/plotter unit (RL70CRC+) and its fabulous. You can overlay the radar on the chart which takes away all the guessing from a radar. The earlier colour versions can be upgraded to overlay with a chip upgrade, but I'm not sure about the b&w versions.
