Radar/AIS installation

The OP has done a runner as the madness begins
May be wise for them to hopefully come back and list what he realllllllly. Needs and what he really does not need
I wonder if he has a boat yet , or an anchor ., .or heater , or how to wire his starter battery , lots of good advice here , hell I love this place

from what i can see most radome s s/h come in around 300 and an mfd ( eg. ray 120 ) around 6 -800 , what system are you looking at complete for 350 ?
Furuno.... not an MFD,

I am not looking at one... I bought it. a few weeks ago... Last year when my old Raytheon was on the blink I picked up a raymarine pathfinder system for €250.... when my system was repaired I sold it to a guy who needed the scanner for the same money.. ( the repair did not last)

These things change hands at what I call " take a chance money".... and the more people want MFD and WIFI then the cheaper they will get...

i have not noticed prices going down in the last couple of years , radome around £300 , MFD ( 120 eg ) £ 6 / 700 ish . ( depending on model )

i think that we can safely assume that he does not have a radar or an ais ,, ( all mfd s do not all come with built in gps,, take heed if about to purchase ) quibling about mounts etc , a hundred or so pounds here or there is not important ,,,,, if the guy is cash strapped ( on a budget as arent many of us :) ) then he can go used.

For heavens sake, we know he doesn't have radar or AIS, that's what the question is about. We don't know anything else though. I said MOST new MFDs have built in GPS. I cannot remember the last time i fitted a new MFD that had to have an external GPS, must be 10 years ago.

Thank you all for the input from which I have concluded I will need to budget £4/5k for an adequate radar/AIS installed and will take this into account re the boat purchase.

He covered him self when he said this
"It is possible to spend almost endless amounts more."

Just so.

Except I wasn't covering myself, I was making a rough lower estimate for basic good kit that he might install without losing his shirt. You could tot the figures up differently but I feel at the end of proceedings the OP would end up spending that ball park figure, or more.

Flatulent self appointed experts seem to be a staple of specialist web sites, I am starting to think the rainbow warrior may be one such, he seems to ferment a row every time he pipes up.

.

i wish i knew where, i only know gumtree , ebay and f/b ( alas i live away from the sailing hub centres ) any pointers would be much appreciated
You have the right places... maybe your timing /luck were out... Yachts and yachty-bits for sale on FB and the for sale forum here are the best places... timing is key.... if you know any riggers they may have good leads as many folks take off radars for racing etc...

i saw a nice signature on a forum a while back "Most internet forums have enough "experts" to drown out those with the real knowledge."

O thought you made a reasnable post and 3000 plus is about right with many other combinations costing a lot more.

there are plenty come up at about the prices i quoted, but never a complete system, i dont like mixing and matching off the internet .

Here is my tuppence. I like my gear separate. Ais on one screen, Radar on another and GPS on another. I like it all uncluttered but that is just how my brain works. Sure they can talk to each other if they want but it is to my mind more gimmicky than necessary.

yes , with you on that , but with multi option,, may require more than one MFD

That's just about the worst possible combination if anyone wants to make any sense of the data!

Having AIS and radar overlay on a plotter screen is by far the most sensible option for ordinary mortals who want to see the information clearly in front of them.

As i said that is just how my brain works. Each to his own. Why is it the worst combination? Just your opinion and is worth about twopence.

if you have a decent sized screen,, eg ray 120 ,d ont know if i would like all that on an 80 . i may be wrong

I have chart, radar and AIS on an 8" Garmin plotter. Works fine. Radar/chart overlay is by far the easiest way of understanding radar returns (despite what dulls says!). And adding AIS data is simply logical (again, despite what dulls says).

Why do you insist on being dishonest about what i said?
