Quick Oil Question

I think I would ask him just what 'series 1 HD' means. The term 'HD' as used by Castrol would be good but it is unclear what it means from your man. IIRC the oil specified by Bukh would be an engine oil that would contain some wear additives.

Thanks Vyv, again, for your input. This is becoming a most frustrating issue. All I want is to be able to say is 'that's the one I need' and then go buy it! Will ask your question and see what he says.

Surely the gearbox does not hold a large quantity of oil ?

Is it not the same oil as the engine uses ?

If so why not just use the same oil for engine and gearbox Simply surely to just have one grade of oil to worry about.?

The manual specifies an HD oil, either 20 or 30 weight, for the ZF BW-6 gearbox. HD oils have rather more additives than engine oils to cope with the increased level of sliding. I think I would go for a multigrade rather than the monograde, in which case there are plenty of good choices.

Some while ago I posted a query about SAE 20 oil for a Bukh DV36 engine gearbox. I have since found this site selling SAE 20

http://www.andybuysbikes.com/oil.htm

Apologies if this question sounds simple. I am something of an 'oil numpty' but are all SAE 20s the same and will this be OK for gearbox?

Many thanks in advance as always.

Chas

As recommended by Bukh UK in Poole, the engine takes 15w/40 mineral oil, which is available just about anywhere. This has superceeded the SAE 20 recommendation.
