I am new to this forum, but have searched to see if anyone else has asked the question I'm about too. Please be gentle in your responses.

I am a newbie to all of this and although I can in theory sail a boat, as in make it go and turn etc, I have very little experience. I have recently retired (early 50's), I would like to get more sailing experience with a view to buying a small yacht. I live in the north east of England (Newcastle upon Tyne) and wondered if anyone has any experience of the local yacht clubs, if they are friendly etc?

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome aboard. :)

I’m not in the Royal Northumberland Yacht Club at Blyth but coincidently, yesterday I spoke with a lady who is. She commended it as a very friendly place with boats looking for crews. A quick search will bring up theor website.
There is also an active dingy sailing club at Tynemouth and I think that there is one based on the south side of the river as well.

When I lived in Newcastle in the 90s Tynemouth was very good at introducing newby's and my wife learnt to sail there. They used to have training sessions in Enterprises on a Friday night and all you had to do was turn up and join in. The deal was if you started to attend frequently it was suggested you might join, get a regular crewing post in someone's boat and go sailing more frequently.

It helped keep a fairly big fleet fed with keen new talent.

Don't know whether they still do similar but it was a welcoming club and a bit of dinghy sailing is great for getting up the learning curve

Hi Steve

Not sure where you live or exactly what type of sailing you intend to do, but I am based at Royal Quays Marina North Shields with a motorsailer and mainly sail single handed, but you are welcome
to come for a couple of sails with me, but usually not for the light hearted being offshore North Sea.

If interested PM me and I will send more information.

Mike

He means '"make sure you've made you last will and testament"!

There's nowt wrong with a bit of a swell - better than the short steep chops we get around the coast of Argyll. Adds a bit of excitement, though probably a bit too much if its your first time out when single handed.

I strongly recommend Coquet Yacht Club at Amble. Rightly called the friendliest club in the friendliest port. P m. Me and I will put you in touch
