Pwllheli marina or North Wales generally

I dont remember butlins but we have a van on the site there and it gets nicer every year. Pwllheli is no worse than any of the other towns in the area. However the coucil in Pwllheli are taking over the running of the marina from 1st April 2008 so dont see you getting much change from 4k for a 10mtr berth next your. i paid just over 3k for a 30ft boat this year.

Hi Kipper,

I didn't know the council were terminating Yachthaven's contract. Do you know why? I would guess it's to cut out the middleman.

I have to say if they are as stingy with the marina maintenance as they are with the maintenance of the channel itself - ie the dredging, or lack of it - then it does not bode too well.

On that point, it is worth noting that Pwllheli does not really have 24 hour access at the moment. The channel is silting up so badly that in 2 places it is not accessible on low spring tides. We have just scraped in on a few occasions this year, and we have outdrives! So to any shaft driven powerboat and certainly to pretty much all yachts Pwllheli does have restricted access - but it is certainly not fully tidal like most other local ports.

I liked my stay in PD. I also liked the variety of boats there, the range is wide and varied. Very interesting. Hopefully see you next year when I do the trip again.

Yes, I can often be found huddled around a warm Kawasaki breakfast sandwich.

Nice to see no one has mentioned Port Dinorwic with its totally protected dock. Don't want too many of you Solent 'deck walkers' spoiling the peace and quiet here. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well....

I did look at Port Dinorwic, but as you will see from my previous post it's a bit out of the chosen area. In any case is there not a long hike before you get to the open sea?

[/ QUOTE ]

15 minutes, if you turn left, 30- 45 minutes if you turn right, but the trip is very nice.

True it is no longer full 24 hour access but still better than other places in the area. The coucil are doing it for political reasons. They want all the revenue, they will be cutting costs and have already mentioned job cuts and there will be a new sailing accadamy built over the next year or so and they want the quudos and money from that. I think it will be a farse as they cant even look after thr harbour and channel as you quitr rightly say.

"They want all the revenue, they will be cutting costs and have already mentioned job cuts and there will be a new sailing accadamy built over the next year or so "

As long as it does not effect the Welsh language! which is the reason they stopped further development of the marina...........

Indeed. That whole extension debacle was one of the biggest cock ups I have seen. What a farce - there was never even an application submitted. The whole argument was over whether the council should submit the application to itself, let alone grant the actual consent.

It still amazes me (well in truth, it doesn't amaze me really) that there is not even a shop to buy a pint of milk at the marina - the nearest one is a mile away in the town proper. I and everyone else would love nothing more than to have a nice meal overlooking the marina after a hard day's boating, but no, the council won't allow that as it would "take trade away from the town".

As has been mentioned here, how many people on the marina do you know who actually go for a drink or meal in Pwllheli itself? As an Englishman, you are not really made all that welcome - hence most people decanting to Abersoch/Llanbedrog and surrounds.

I hope the rumours of staff cuts are not true as they are a helpful bunch really and many of them have now been there for a long time - most of them were young when they started too - surely that has to be a benefit to the town as a whole, never mind all the supporting businesses that would have grown up around an extended marina.

PEJ They are all WRONG. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Have a good look at Port Dinorwic.
Pros.
No matter what the Weather you can get out to play in the Straits.
With a speedy boat the Swellies is no prob any time.
If it blows from one end go to tother.
Beaches?
Llanddwyn bloody marvelous and never too crowded.
Tother side, Moelfre , Benllech, Red Warf Bay, or Red Dwarf bay as one dozy bird called it whilst askig directions!
Cozy (none plasitc) trad type Marina/ Harbour.
Portmadoc 67 miles away Pwllheli a bit less.
IOM 54 from Puffin Isle.
Dublin 60 ish from Caernarfon bar.
Conwy about 15 ish can't quite remember exact.
Holyhead about 35 so loads of places to go look at.
Caernarfon just up the Straits, marina and the river where Searush sits.
Menai Bridge, moorings plus the Pier and some good Pubs.
Beaumaris, moorings and the Pier and more Pubs!.
Good fishing if yer nto it, ask the Major, no on second thoughts ask someone else! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
I think it is a good base.
You won't go hungry with Me around either!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Cons.
Ok the inner dock is restricted to 3.5 hours either side.
The Basin where the Major squats, better 5 hours either side at neaps and at least 4 at Springs.
Caernarfon bar can be tricky when the wind and tide don't agree.
Puffin end there can be a big swell from time to time but there is always water.

I enjoyed Portmadoc , I got marooned ther for a bit earlier this Year.
I will go back there for a longer sample next Year. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
I have not explored that side enough yet.
Trouble is the Prevailings blow onto that side.
However the scenery is nice there too. Well that goes for the whole Area really.
Holyhead is 24/7 ref water.
But it can get lumpy around the top of Anglesey and there are lots of overfalls( which can be and should be avoided) but like Small Boat said good security and atmosphere, nice Yacht club too.
Don't like Holyhead Town much Me self.
No it's PD for Me, with abit of Portmadoc thrown in.
Pwllheli, the Marina is ok but again the Locals are not My taste and I,m a Welsh speaking (kinda ) Welshman too! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
South Anglesey is less "Welsh" if yer gets me drift.
The Straits also contain a Park and Launch at Menai Bridge, Plas Newydd (Marqis of Anglesey's pile, Plas Menai, National Water sports centre For Wales.
ABC Boatyard, Dicikes Boatyard, lifting facility at PD with a new engineering shed, riggers.
Ooh and if yer needs a PB 2 Course or an Advanced PB Course I can sort that out too, (blatant advert OK)!
Seriosly, blimey I don't believe I typed that but seriosly consider the Straits.
See navigating them aint a prob.
Like I say to peeps if yer wanna see the way through I'll show yer.
I know every rock and sandbank
Cos I,ve hit em all /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Jeez, that must be the first post you made that actually makes sence and not a rhyme in sight /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Have you fitted a sounder to that RIB yet /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Did you see the Major at the meet - shirt & jacket no less /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

It looked too formal for you /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Met up with MK in Mallorca but your name wasn't mentioned /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Kwakers, you couldn't keep your mouth shut, now we'll have thousands of those southerners trying to turn PD into some kind of Starbucks outlet mall type place, instead of the trad place it is now.

Next we'll be told that it is compulsory to wear shirt & jackets in and around the port.

Anyway, I'm off to Australia now. See ya all.

I sailed from Abersoch from about 1975 and Pwhllelli marina was a bit of a godsend - but I could never understand why a series of shops, restaurants and other businesses didnt line the route from the town right to the marina - the businesses may, or may not, have been run by locals, but most of the jobs would be for local people.

It was a real ballsache having to drive to get anything, or go anywhere. ost other marinas have at least a pub across the road, and many have a series of restaurants, shops, etc. in the immediate vicinity.

Part of the reason I got out of there as soon as I bought the boat - Had to drive to get anything from Glasson, but it was cheaper, and a much nicer location IMHO, (but not much good if you want to go to sea!!

Very small minded council but, as the marina is full with a long waiting list, I guess they have got the world by the short and curlies.

In reverse order.
My name wasn,t mentioned?
No but I could feel the knives in Me back!!
Too Formal, get out of it, I,d just invested in a new pair of jeans (£3.00 Tescos) but I couldn't make it to the Gig, what a waste of dosh.

I made a Post which didn,t rhyme and made some sense,
Of that we need some recompense,
This further info will make sense
Well if not it's still My two Pence!
Serious and making sense is not My bag,
So listen up this may drag
Into some useful information
About how to Mobo about the Location,
Tiss a powefull boat yer needs round ere
Cos the Tides and Wind can be queer
But saying that it's not too bad
Some lovely spots can be had, to drop the anchor
Stay a while,
Call in a Pub and Drink in Style
Feed yer belly give it some welly
But look out for the Irish
They are not well really! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
