Pwllheli marina advice

Hi
I know the area, and the costs...........really just wanted an "insiders" perspective of being based there, as its difficult to judge as a visitor

Stuff like,.........friendliness/cleanliness.noise etc user friendly/social scene/security etc etc really stuff like that

Cheers

Definitely narrowed it down to the boats mentioned, and probably the Beneteau for the reasons you highlighted.

Just need to get through the winter and will probably take the plunge in the spring. Currently getting back up to speed with boaty stuff so working through day skipper theory and will need to go and do the practical!

Work in the aviation business, so keep getting stuff mixed up!!

Cheers

Good stuff!

Funny you mentioning the Aviation world.
I was Instructing an ex Vulcan pilot (retired) a few weeks ago
He kept getting port and starboard mixed up:eek:

OK after an hour or so!
Think it could have been nerves or me mixing up 'left hand down a bit' with 'port and staboard a bit':D

Brought up on the 'Navy Lark' that's my excuse.

What was interesting, me 'Pilot' told me the Nav Man on Vulcans sat facing aft which did confuse some at first!

Another time whislt talking to a chap doing his Dazed Kipper theory.
I said I thought he would find it easy
He had a fixed wing PPL and a Helicopter cert.

'No' he said-- it's ok up there, I can follow a railway line or motorway or summat'
Nowt to see when you go to sea, yer see!'

'Never thought of that' says I

Thought about anywhere else apart from Pwllheli?

Hi. We are based in the paupers outer harbour. We got piles :eek:but no cash.:D

We post rationalise this decision by saying the benefits of walk on did not merit the additional £3K tariff!

Re Pwllheli Marina (English sp Poofwilly, Pulleywooly, Pullwelly etc)

Cant give you much details re marina security etc... Never used it as a marina berth holder... Have always got in by "knowing the gate code" ... So not high security...Not heard of problems of tea leaves though....
Marina and harbour well covered by video from Marina and HM office..There was a night security patrol. Not sure if still operating. There is a gated car park for berth holders. Believe that Marina has 24/7 reception cover.

Marina pretty well protected in all weathers though some damage caused in recent exceptional strong winds.

Contrary to Marina advertising 24 hour access is poor for deep keel raggies or anything with more than 1.2m draft. Restricted to 2 hours before or after low water but should not affect most stinkies sorry Mobos .

Two years ago there was a significant waiting list but this appears to have evaporated last year and the council face a greater problem in fleecing the existing or new users without it.

I would anticipate that sometime in the future the management/ ownership of the marina will move to the private sector but at the moment the profits get lost in the black hole of the local council rather than in significant reinvestment. Perhaps pressure for public sector cuts will bring this day forward with the council having to realise some assets for cash.

Its a long walk to the shops or Chippy from the Marina.. We have not found any to die for eating/drinking establishments that dont need a car... Allports chippy is one of the best in the North West. New Asda has caused closure of a lot of local shops... Makes the remaining town look pretty shabby..
But if you like Sea Food there is a shop next to spar at Market place which does local seafood fantastic...

If you want to join in with locals,do what you would do if you visit a foreign country. Respect them and their ways, learn a little language and enjoy their company. It feels strange at first visiting a local establishment where everybody is talking in tongues except you.

Sailing Club has started a motor boat section in the last two years that appears to be fairly pro-active... Might offer some additional social gatherings of a like mind.. Cruising Cardigan bay in convoy and organised meals etc.. At least it might mean buddying up to get somewhere which gives a bit of comfort if you are single engined or not completely happy to go it alone.

Local Back up services seem pretty good but I heard you need to avoid that Kwacka :D:D

I have never purchased fuel from pontoon and only heard the usual complaints regarding Marina prices and monopoly etc. Some of this parish have found alternative supplies for smaller quantities that can be carried on board

Sailing club does offer meals and drinks but at no discount to local fare.
It can be very busy with visitors during the "Season" of events and championships..

Pwllheli has been good this year , Weather has been fantastic, I have not had to wear wet weather gear all year so far..... It has its own weather climate. You will be amazed how often it can be raining on Portmadog but blue skies 10miles away. Makes weather forecasting interesting... Look up the sunshine stats if you dont believe me.

Other things to do.

We have usual managed to entertain most visitors with a sail. If weather too bad we have been known to vist castles, plenty to choose from from Conway Caernarfon Criccieth Beamaris Harlech to name a few..
Climbing and walking in snowdonia,
Karting and wakeboarding close by,
steam railways in abundance at Caernarfon,Porthmadog being nearest. Surfing hells mouth, whistling sands etc..
The emphasis is on sports but if you want some culture some good shows at the Venue Llandudno.Recently went to see Sound of Music on tour with Connie Francis.

Finally Make sure when you get your boat your drinks cabinet well stocked as some Forum members will be around before you can say "sun over the yard arm" or something similar
:):)

Sunday Market

Contrary to duff intelligence put out by ex- military. Pwllheli is defo open on Sunday. Main market in market square and one of the best coffees can be obtained from Bistro above spar. :)

Come on Major keep up to date now..... Your just going on those jaundiced views of another forum user MF has not found her way here for some time to my knowledge.;) (Could have been in Stealth mode)

Thanks for all the information............we know the area pretty well, Jo has been an Abersoch regular for 30 years, and in laws have a place there. We spend the odd week with a boat at Abersoch every year, Getting a boat based at Pwllheli will be great............no problem with drinks cupboard, just keeping it stocked. When we get sorted will look you out
Cheers

Kawasaki

Most of my flying is oceanic, so trust the old GPS/IRS !

Pwllheli suits us because inlaws are based on Abersoch.

I see you are based in Anglesy............do you do the day skipper practical? and is a passport required for Yns Mon?

Cheers

Can sort out Passport, Day Skip and yer Drinks Cabinet out no sweat:D

Was berthed in Puffwelly years ago. Downsides. The town was a rough sort of place and did not take kindly to foreigners.

The other downside is, apart from Portmadoc theres hardly anywhere to go except for day sailing. We used to scoot across to Ireland and spend a week or two up and down there.

Thirdly, customer service or satisfaction has yet to be invented in Wales, dunno about Puffwelly these days.

Yeh, all those Foreigners there must have a really rough time of it:p

Now hlb, you must be carefull going to foreign lands
Oh! well done in spelling Porthmadoc , almost the Welsh way. You been taking lessons:)

Thirdly, customer service or satisfaction has yet to be invented in Wales,

Wait till I tell Mark in Caernarfon !!
:D

(snip)

I'm a great exponent of the "Full Ahead, Backwards, Chief" command structure. Especially when the Starboard Lookout warns me of an "eeensy-teensy, sodding great harbour wall ahead, sir" :D It can get rather desperate then with "Full ahead, backwards, a bit more, chief" (in a slightly higher pitched & louder voice.)

It was definitely shut when I was there four years ago. They must open just for you.

We should send a gun boat round there and re garrison the castles, put them in stocks and throw eggs and tomatoes. Make them reopen the copper and slate mines. Boat mending might be a bit more attractive then.
