Putting the cat down

Looking at some of your postings I get the impression that keel boaters are the "enemy"!

It is a fact that frequently higher charges are made for mooring cats. Whether the boats are 25% wider or 125% wider is irrelevant. I just don't relish being asked to pay twice as much for a mooring. If you are prepared to argue the case every time you moor up then fine, I'd rather be doing something else!

Most people accept that cats are more stable, but, in extremis, they do have a problem of not being self righting.

We all make our own choices. I'm just a bit surprised that you seem to be quite so passionate about it

Re: Putting the cat down

Well now! I have to say "Thou protesteth too much"
When you have been on this site for a while you will get to know that there is a good deal of good natured banter going on although some posts like A-7 are certainly somewhat strange. I am not prejudiced against monohull owners and you take my post too seriously. I have been sailing for over 40 years and have owned and sailed everything from old gaffers to racing cats. Lighten up and read again!
Actually I have found that recently most marinas now have recognised that your beam (which is 16ft 4 inches by the way not 16ft 6) is no greater than a MoBo and on my 3 months cruise in the channel last year I was only surcharged once and that was in Binic (bloody expensive don't go there) In the Solent I visit Cowes regularly, Yarmouth, Lymington, and other places and have never paid a surcharge. No need to protest. Just don't patronise marinas that do. After all one of the nice things about cruising cats is the comfort that can be found at anchor in places where monohulls either can't or don't want to go.
Finally I have met only interest in my boat wherever I have been and don't believe it reasonable to protest about prejudice so openly. There may be some ignorance but even that is fading as there are more cats about.
I have a friend who has a cat on the east coast. He is originally from Jamaica but brought up in Liverpool. His wife is Chinese. I love his company as he is totally without prejudice. He once replied to a question about the prejudice people have against multihulls by saying. Listen man! I'm a black scouser with a chinkie wife living on the east coast. Wanna ask me again about prejudice? Clearly it's more in your mind than others and we are all trying to tell you this Forum does not discriminate. Relax!!!!

Re: Putting the cat down

Ere! Cats might not recover from capsize but boats with big heavy keels don't recover from sinking either. And by the way many modern monohulls have beams that make them more susceptable to capsize than cats are and when they go rails under turn upside down, fill up with water and sink!

Absolutly not

In my mind its better to be afloat on a log than doing the gardening

My concern is that have seen cases where Cats are treated as "the enemy" by some and I would like to find a way to bridge that gap

Any further insight appreciated

If you want insight you won't get it on this forum!!!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I think you are seeing a problem that doesn't really exist. We all know the arguements, but I don't think there is any prejudice one way or the other on this forum. However, there will be some gentle leg pulling. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

You also have the fact that cat owners are universally arrogant, looking down on monohull sailors as though they are some kind of elite (they even name their cats this!).

Catamaran owners are just too scared to sail properly and hint of lean and they are hurrying about reefing their sail cloth where a mono sailor just takes it in his stride. Most cat owners arpire to sail a proper yacht but for either personal or family reasons are just too scared.

So why should marina's and clubs subsidise them by offering cheaper moorings, if you want a big fat boat you should expect to pay extra, otherwise real sailors don't want you on our marina's.

end of!

Re: Putting the cat down

Universally arrogant.....? OOOOOOOHHHHHH! Get you then! Hope your keel falls off.......!

Re: Putting the cat down

Oh - his keel won't fall off ... he has more time to check the keel bolts cos he only has half as much boat to antifoul!!

Re: Putting the cat down

A troll! Moi!! I think not. Lighten up. Just sail your things but don't try to convert everyone!! ;.)

Re: Putting the cat down

Bugger! I forgot who he was! Wind up eh? OK I confess then I am an arrogant sod and I will git you you you...... midget!!!

Re: Putting the cat down

Might help if you posted your profile then mightn't it? Who are you? Where are you? What do you sail? Come on then.... out!!

Re: Putting the cat down

I'll be buying a boat in the Med. in 2007, to sail around in for a bit with my family, until it gets boring....
I've sailed a few cats, mostly Hobies/Darts etc but also a F:Pajot which would be perfect in my opinion. However! my wife is Norwegian (=beautiful, intelligent, blonde but very conservative about more than one hull) so I am going to have to trick her into having a play with a cat. We will be on holiday at home in Cornwall (Newquay) for the whole of July. Anybody in the area with a cat we could hitch a short ride on for an hour or so?

Re: Putting the cat down

i googled on troll and the first site i came to had a series of definitions, the first of which was

Level one - "Playtime" - This is where the troller is simply out for the gratification provided by a quick "win". An example of this might be to join a list with a fictitious name, cause an argument, withdraw and then boast to friends about what he/she had done. Such trolls are relatively easy to spot because their attack or provocation is fairly blatant, and the persona is fairly two-dimensional. [my italics]

any bells ringing?

Re: Putting the cat down

What does it matter to you who I am or where I am or what I sail? How very nosey of you.

[/ QUOTE ] . . . It matters no more or less to us than your opinion does . . .
