I am looking to upgrade my Antares 620 to something more sociable. I am planning short passages across the Irish sea and so need protection from the elements. I have looked at 2 models, the Aquador 26 HT and a regal Commodore 2665. Does anyone have any advice relating to the practacalities of these two models. I am particuarly interested in discovering the possibility of travelling safely on the Commodore with the covers up.

For Me the Aquador would be my choice, good build nice seakeeping qualities, and single diesel, given that it is likely that fuel prices will increase drastically some time soon, it would be a good choice. All imho of course!!

Yip, Def, go for the Aquador, Enclosed wheel house, walk a round deck, Single diesel and good sea keeping abilities.
The Regal commodore is more so An American Lakes boat. I have an American boat, and they are crap for going out with the canopies up. if its blowing you need to be prepared to take them down and get wet, Plus the Regals have very tall topsides which won't be great in a hoolley..

Thats great thanks. I think I was getting a bit of 'sales talk' at the weekend when the guy told me the commodore would go at full chat with the covers on. Any opinions on the accomodatin layout variances between the two? I also have some ladies sunbathing issues that I need to account for, any thoughts?

nowt will go at full chat with the covers on. And even if it could, the visibility is awful. Sunbathing? Cockpit of the 26HT works, or what about the foredeck of the 25c?

Not too familiar with the comodore. However as a matter of interest my Bayliner 2655 which is a similar boat, will go full chat as you say with the covers up no probs. So in fairness maybe the sales guy was not telling you porkys.

We are running a test of the new Regal 3060 Commodore in January 2005 issue of Motor Boats Monthly if that's any help. Haven't seen the results yet but generally speaking Regal do seem to do a bettter job than most when it comes to building solid, sea worthy hulls.

We also tested the Aquador 26 in August 2003 in case you missed it.

I personally would not pick the Regal, they are more for sports/fun boating in American lakes and calm seas, although they are good for just messing around the near bays.
Go for something more sea worthy and preferably with a diesel engine.

Since when have Regals been lake boats?

It's worth pointing out, as has been done so on this forum on many occassions, US lakes can be huge expanses of water, many hundreds of miles wide, and as such produce conditions worse than mid channel here.

Demo'd the Aquador a couple of weeks ago down in the Solent in a F4. Mighty impressed - and once set up correctly made good head way with very little slam. 20knts with tide and 15knts against. Even SWMBO would find it a smooth ride. Felt very secure. Downside - not alot of places to sunbathe on the bow and the fenders we put out through the sun hatches. Nice and roomy and sociable cockpit.

With our weather, am seriously looking at a 2-3yr old one, and am hoping to do a demo in a 25 within the next 2 weeks.

Take one out and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Just to clarify something ref Regals with the covers up. I have a 2550 LSC and I too am looking to move to an Aquador. On the inside of the 2550 Bimini, on the Taylor Made label, it clearly states that you should not travel with the Bimini deployed at greater than 35 Kts ( the 2550 does 48 Kts) and in the owners guide, it says that you should not exceed 25 with the full camper canvas up. I don't know the spec of the Commodore, but as most Regals are fairly Schnell boats on those funky hulls, I doubt if you could go full chat with the covers up.

In the interest of full disclosure, my boat is a 1999, so the technology may have moved on since then, but as Aerodynamics is a fairly constant beast, I doubt it will take full chat for too long. Also 30kts into a 20 kts headwind will give you 50 Kts of pressure on the canopy so you pays your money and takes your chance.

Hope this helps
