What's up with PBO and YM publication dates? Normally PBO hits the news stands a week after YM. Subscription issues either arrive on the same day as YM or a few days later.

This month PBO has arrived first and there's no sign of YM (or Sailing Today) in either the mail or on the news stands.

What's occuring? Are IPC changing the relative priorities for the mags?

It is understood in publishing that the magazine that is on sale first gets the best position in the market.

For many years, YM & PBO both published on the 3rd Thursday of the month preceding cover date.

YM was then moved to the 2nd Thursday, where it has remained to this day - October issue out tomorrow in fact.

PBO moved to the 1st Thursday of the month with the September issue. I suspect that this was due to Sailing Today(non-IPC), being published ahead of it, gaining sales at PBO's expense. This is a defence mechanism.

Subscription copies should be received (in the UK) just before or on official publication day but of course to some extent depend on the handling of the bulk dispatch by the Royal Mail.

Although I retired 10 years ago I believe that the same principles apply today. It must have caused a certain amount of chaos in the Advertisement Dept with all the copy dates being brought forward!
