Psychology of boating?

Why do we spend so much on our hobby?
Where do people get their kicks ?

Some go sailing.

Others like motorboats of various sorts, fast and small, or comfortable though slower.

What makes the difference the difference between a raggie and a stinkpot?

Time and Money

Its obvious innit? If you've got loads of time and no money, you go sailing. If you've got loads of money and no time, you go motorboating
If there's anybody out there with loads of money AND loads of time, please tell us how you did it

I think it more a matter of chance if one ends up a confirmed raggie or power. Chance of what dad did, what magazines you come across, where you are planning to crusie, what yourr mates have got, and so on. I don't see much difference really in fanatical sail or power, and at larger sizes they are both displacement with even fewer differences. Motobikes and cars don't have so much of the them and us, i think, tho there is some. And there again, nutcase fanatics about cars (or bikes) are quite similar to boat nuts, and even sometimes the same people. Most skippers will have done lots of sailboating (miles cheaper per hour and ocean-capable at small sizes) but convert to power cos the big private boats are 80% power.

None of which answer the question bout the psychology, which i can't answer cos i'm one of the nutters.

Why you asking me? I'm a conformed classic boat/boat nutter, I was a confirmed classic car nutter, still am and a classic bike nutter, still am! So basically no hope for me! I even like some of the newer boats, Oh God is there no end to this depravity?
