proud moment... launch time with some pics

Cure for webcam dependence is to stay on board this weekend. After a few days afloat you'll have more confidence in her.
Good luck.
Ps if my boatyard had a webcam i'de be no better.

as much as id love to im working in aberdeen this weekend on the other side of the country so any floating fun is out of the window til next weekend for me

Well done Symondo. She looks ready to get out and enjoy the improving weather now.

The 'stay on board for a few nights' advice is sound. I always feel a huge amount of comfort with any boat if I spend more time on board.

So, whenever you can, use her. Even just sleeping overnight and pottering builds a relationship with a boat. And after a few short journeys, you'll soon forget that list of remedial work that you ploughed through.

Hope you guys have a pleasant family summer.

Cheers

Garold

Nice work symondo, hope you and your family have a great season ahead.

If you keep in touch with Divemaster (Alf), perhaps you could arrange a sort of cruise in company for a day or two while he is on the West Coast with his own boat. You could learn a lot in a short time from an experienced boater like him.

Funny you should say that. My dad was down today speaking with the engineers while they were investigating the starter trouble. He was also speaking to other owners there who have offered to cruise along with us and show us the area and give tips etc...

I'm assuming knowledge is power and theres an infinite amount out there to collect

If you come out the loch and turn starboard be aware of the Appin rocks!
When you do head up the Sound of Mull I can say the pontoons at Lochailine are worth a visit, worth overnighting.

Where about are you based? I notice Lochaber? We stay in Spean bridge and I also now have my dads old boat which is a 16ft assault craft which generally goes out on loch linnhe

..........

Divemaster - let us know when your about and shall keep an eye out, if your in our area feel free to drop me a message :)

Will do .....

With the Fairline 32 hull you have there she will slam (at times hard) in head seas, Keep that bow down with legs trimmed in and flaps down to minimise the movement and she'll reward you with a smoother ride..... and she won't be wet...

In following seas, you need to do the opposite ... trim the flaps up and let the chine at the bow lift the bow with natural forces and that will stop her moving hard into the next wave and shear out.

In flat seas she will reward you with a bit extra speed if you keep the bow slightly lifted...

Bow have quite shallow draught, so can be flighty when manoeuvring in wind ... when practicing stop her in an open area and position her in various positions to the wind... let the wind catch the bow and let it go ... first let her go and see how she start a slow swing, but note how quick she becomes un-manageable.... then practice on how far she can be "let go" and still bring her back under control..... and also how to react to back her our of the situation.

Copied and pasted to my 'notes' :)
We have plans of getting her out in the middle of the loch once sorted to try some manoeuvres and see what happens with nothing about to hit.

I think the old man is looking to hire a local trainer for a weekend of handling training so everyone can get a good briefing on using the boat

Greta post! Congrats on getting the boat sorted and wishing you and your Dad many happy times aboard.

Cheers Gord

I keep my boat on a mooring at Glencoe boat club, I live just the other side of the bridge. Where do you launch the assault craft?

Ahh ok i know whweree you are there!
We usually launch it in Corpach as we have a membership to use the slipway there. Dont think we've ever ventured out far come to think of it

The proud feeling was short lived..

We managed to get the heater up and running and thought result!

However we are still waiting on the starter motor which was due to be replaced on Monday.

Further to this to add insult to the efforts to get her on the water, we dipped the tank to check how much fuel we had, the gauge read 'full' but couldn't suss air bubbles in the heater supply.

Turns out the pirate we bought from not only screwed over a number of items on the boat hence the long time between getting said vessel and getting her on the water but also drained the tank which was sold as 'full' and then somehow managed to stick the gauge float to read as full.

So now she's in the water with probly enough fumes to start her up but not actually get her to the slipway for fuel, so she needs towed.

Awaiting confirmation but we should be getting a delivery on Friday with the vague hope that we might get to go out on her at the weekend....

Not very happy but what else can you do!

Hey, chin up & think positive! It'll all be worthwhile and all the disappointments get forgotten once you're underway - I think that's all part of the boating lark! (At least it has been for us - one step forward... )

Looking forward to the trip report! :encouragement:

There shall be a full report the day she leaves her mooring lol

I just can't believe its sat virtually empty since last august. If I had known about it I would of had it resolved before she went in.

But will need to sort the gauge while its empty and just hope we finally get the starter a week late and fuel Friday then we can actually try out these rebuilt legs! I think its the last bit to be tested

Good luck with the voyage, and have a great boating summer. Bit of a bugger with the fuel, but sellers dishonesty is not that unusual.

+1. Many congratulations!

Nice picture in post #17

Tiny tiny point in the grand scheme of things, but I think you'll find that lifebuoy on the guard rail really annoying when driving from the lower helm :D

Think I remember Starboard helm, and relatively high seat (see wiper.... which is too small by the way... but as she is not wet, you'll only need them in rain).... so lifebuoy and fenders (when in holders) does not impact viz too much when boat is trimmed right ... but it is a few years since I've helmed a F32 of that era .... most annoying part when manoeuvring was the Volvo throttles of that era...

Yep starboard helm, havent sorted the wipers - they need new belts. But we came to the conclusion if they were required we werent planning on being on it to start with lol

bit of a techy 1 - we have half solved our fuelling issue... and got our hands on 20 gallons until the tanker can come and top us up.

What kind of running could we expect from 2x AQD40's with 20 gallons?

We arent planning going far, but would like to run her upto temp, try and get her on the plain to see how she handles etc... maybe an afternoons mucking about trying manovures etc...

Think you may need to calculate with 10 GPH (ish) at cruise ... (32 - 3400 RPM from recollection ... Presume TMD40A's at 130 Hp each) .... legs trimmed in and with some help from trim-tabs, she should stay on plane until you drop down to about 14-15 knots... With only 20 Gallons, you are light, so should pop up fast .... but I'd be cautious about that if I were you as I cannot recall where fuel pick-up is on the tank .... and the last thing I'd want to do on a first time out would be to get air into the fuel system...

Better to potter around up the loch and enjoy half an hour at slow speed up the way and back bringing the engines up to low operating temp, and inspecting them frequently, then spend an hour or two mucking around manoeuvring before you moor up again ..... that should leave you with a comfortable margin in the tank ...
