Reasons

The advantages seem to outway the disadvantages, with the disadvantages being easily overcome, I am looking at purchasing a boat that needs alittle work, although the rigging all seems ok, I may consider one of these devices, the boat is a 27' with alloy mast so should work ok, thanks for everybodies input.

Good clear post. Thanks. It's got me thinking though - my main is powerful - fully battened, rod kicker set on a fractional rig with swept back spreaders and therefore not easy to depower in many instances. This is not usually a problem since I know my boat now and can select the right sail for the right job e.g. whether mooring or man overboard practice under sail. But my main is loose footed. So I guess I could let the outhaul right off and use the lazyjacks (which are attached to the foot of the main) to pull up the foot and scandalise that way.

I'll try this weekend and see if it works!

Don't gaffers do this sometimes (I vaguely remeber seeing a picture of Tom Cunliffe's boat with a rolled up mainsail foot, the boom still being horizontal).

I am thinking of fitting a gas vang but was somewhat put off by remarks
that they can fail suddenly with resultant injuries or worse to the unwary.

Any experience out there on this?
