I have been advised that I have corrosion on both prop shafts and that they should be replaced. Engines done 2300 hours, boat is 1990 build.

This all sounds alarming and expensive.......any advice on here on how I should proceed?

Have new ones made. If you say where you are located somebody will be able to advise a local specialist. Perhaps a good idea to try and find out what caused the corrosion, but I suspect wrong grade material. The shafts should be machined exactly like the existing as I suspect that the props are different diameter from the shafts and there is a machined step - at least I have seen that on another older Trader than yours.

Lot of labour involved and make sure the cutless bearings are replaced at the same time.

Shafts are not hugely expensive.

Are they in the boat or have they been drawn ?

Usually corrosion is in way of cutless bearings or stern tube, if on the visible shaft in situ I would suspect either defective catholic protection or a mains voltage leak.

I agree on changing cutless bearings at the same time if you have a traditional packed stern gland consider changing that for a drip less Tides Marine unit if it would fit with a spare second seal placed on the shaft so you can replace the one in use.

Unless you are particularly adept and well equipped it is probably a contractor job, I would have thought there is a choice in a place like Alicante.

you could take it around to Torrevieja for Sealine Costa Blanca, in Marina Salinas to do (Andrew is very good - changed both my shafts etc last year) or Dennis at Costa Blanca Yacht Services in the international marina. I'm guessing the original shafts were made in the far east so you might have a wait on the hard whilst getting yours copied either in Spain or UK and shipped out. if trader can provide drawings first that would save time then it would only be a few days out.

re Cozzy - anchor dragged and props and shaft got bent sadly. Previously all was in excellent condition. Thanks to Insurance Co all is like a swiss watch again
