Reckon you are safe on this one -- You are attempting to save a drifting vessel i.e salvage.. now you are doing this as a good deed, however if they were to say you broke my rudder, you owe me, you have, as others have said a good case to press for salvage dues.

If they are crass about it suggest they talk to insurance company first.
