Princess 54 Fly Depth Gauge Offset

I always set mine to zero. Depth gauge I use as insurance. I want to know how much water is below the keel. Navigators job is to make sure there is plenty.

1.27 metres or just over 4ft, you’d imagine. That’s the draft of them, as far as the specs suggest.

I also have the depth gauge set to show depth under the keel. Tide tables - well actually the chart plotter calculation these days coupled with local knowledge allows me to decide whether or not I can venture somewhere in the first place.

Confirming position in relation to chart depth takes a bit of mental arithmetic to add back the keel depth from the water line. On our P50 I add on 1.4-1.5m.

Thanks everyone, but I am looking for the measurement between the transducer and the bottom of the props so the depth gauge provides depth under props.

Ah I see. I would add 0.5 metres to clear the props and rudders. This was our P50 a few weeks ago.

In reality I set a mental limit of 1m depth (under the keel) as an absolute minimum. In practice I’ve seen 0.8m a few times particularly when coming into Newtown Creek but never over 25 knots.

Not offsetting seems a bit odd?

off set it by 2.0m…..then if it ever reads 0….you’ve got 1.0 margin minimum

what’s the big curved section? Bit in the way of the stern thruster?

I used to do that. Then in our early days on rivers etc shallow water is a big issue. So when encountering a shallow spot I would get spooked - did I add an offset? , If so what was it? Can't remember. How much water have I got? In the end I just set it to zero

Makes sense
