Hi
With the leg off and the driveshaft poking out the back of a kad32, should the shaft be rock solid or have a certain amount of play? Last time it was off , 2 years ago,I was surprised at the amount of play but it was all working ok so changed the boots and stuck it back together and have had no issues.
I seem to have developed a rumbling noise from the back of the boat (RIB) now , and can feel a vibration through the floor, but not constant, its when coming off the power. I'd have thought a bearing would be constant!?
Props were a bit loose a while back and it made a similar noise but got them on tight now. There is slight play between the two props, as in turning the front prop a couple of mm before the back one starts to rotate but no side to side or back and forth. Is that normal or should it be moving instantly as one, zero play!?
Thanks

Normal to have slight play between props, not normal to have play on intermediate shaft, sounds like its time to replace the bearings.

This is similar to the shaft in your boat..
You might have to move the engine forward a tad to replace this inner bearing.

Had grumbling from my dp290 last year. Got worse and worse. More so when turning. So thought it was power steering pump. Turned out the main bearing was totally destroyed. She was still running ok apart from the bad grumbling.

Doh....looking like a winter project. I'll do some more investigations first. I can get the leg off easy enough so if I have to I'll do that and post some video up of the shaft. Thanks for the reply. I'll probably be back to pick your brains in the not to distant future!!

Hmmm...if I'm moving the engine at all I'll probably get a forklift and have it out. So with the bellhousing off ,it's two bearings!? Ohhhhh it sounds so easy!!!! Thanks for replying, I'll come back after a closer inspection and go from there. Thanks

Grim...did you fix it up yourself without to much drama!?
I think I can do it but I can see it being a long job!

Just to be clear. In the link below, No.4 the primary shaft. is what i see sticking out and has quite a wobble on it which you are saying is not good and probably caused by No5 Bearing being knackered. You say "Bearings", but i only see one bearing.!?
Thanks

In the diagram, I seem to have one bearing and a bushing on the inside rather than a bearing. See my reply to spannerman,. I'm just trying to get to grips with it all before i start taking things apart. Thanks

Just had look at that diagram Perhaps they have eliminated the 2nd bearing on the duoprop .
Difficult to understand what would support the other end of jackshaft where it enters the damper plate.
Does not appear to be any journal at end of shaft for for a bearing .If it is only a bushing no need to move engine and much simpler and quicker job. ?

Simpler job, i like the sound of that.
I've seen a few youtube videos where they have the housing off but for two bearings. Should be a laugh taking the bearing off the shaft given where its located!!
First things first. Leg off and see if the shaft is worse than it was before and the source of my rumbling noise
Cheers

On mine the the outer bearing had seized and rotated on the shaft journal . Wear on the oil seal surfaces as well.
Price of a new shaft was eye watering .
Fortunately had a gearbox repair shop next door to my own workshop.
All the bearings were indentified and good quality replacements found.
A mixture of relocating new seals and peening enabled the old shaft to be put back into service .
Engine was moved via scaffold tripod, only needed to go forward 12" or so, most connections were all left attached.
Day to strip out, locate bits and day to refit.
The shaft was still going strong when boat was sold 2 years later.
Could never for the life of me work out why VP never fitted a couple of simple cheap grease points on the transom assembly to lubricate bearings . :(

Prices are ridiculous. We match up the equivalent car parts, use pattern parts and do the work ourselves...not been beaten yet!
Fingers crossed the shaft is ok ?
I'll be back asking more questions when I start digging ?

Well that was'nt so bad. Took 20 minutes for me to take the leg off while my mate knocked a wooden frame up to support it then same again to get the circlips out as neither of us could be bothered to drive down the road to get some long nose ones, then pull the shaft out with the remains of the bearing which came out in lots of pieces. Totally shagged!! New bearing, grease everything up and back together, jobs a goodun. Couple of hours all in all and £30.
