I have been advised this is a better proposition than braided rope for the halyards. Has anyone any experience of this rope and best place to buy please.
Thanks in anticipation

Are you talking Plaited or 3 Strand Twisted?

I have a 41 foot 8 tonne yacht, and need to replace my wire/rope spliced halyards and will be going braid on braid due to it's higher strength and less stretch. That is why I recommend it.

How big is your boat? The loads involved play a big part in which rope you should choose, if you're a junk rigger you're going to have different requirement to a gaff, and different again to a performance sloop!

The one the PRESTRETCHED polyester may be going on is 9 metres cruiser/racer. I take it you are advising me as a professional who has much experience in this subject.

Pre-stretched polyester three strand is fine for halyards, so is pre-stretched or low stretch polyester braid. Then there's your Dyneema and Spectra if you want to go high tech.
The three-strand is easier to splice and has a more traditional look; braid is the more modern look, colour coded. Marlow 3-strand 8mm has an average strength of 1830kg, their 8mm prestretched 8 plait is 1400kg and Marlowbraid 8mm is 1820kg.

Thanks. I am more inclined to go for 3-strand due to ease of splicing (have tried braided and find it impossible) and would buy 220 metre coil as have other uses such as running moorings, small boat anchor rode etc. though prestretched may not be entirely suitable

Despite its name, you'll find it is like knicker elastic when compared to wire or something more hi tech. You will be constantly nipping up your halyards.

I would only use it on small low performance dinghies and as light spinnaker sheets.

Yes, 3 strand would be awful as sheets and halyards.

It's good for warps and rhodes for a reason /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I think Lin and Larry Pardey, and many other world girdling sailors, would take you to task on that! I wouldn't use three strand for sheets but it is great for halyards - soft, flexible, easy to splice.

On my 21fter used for racing I replaced the wire /rope jib halyard with 6mm Spectra. I have been disapointed in the performance in that after a few minutes sailing I have to retension the jib halyard. It does stretch. Still got wire on the main and I reckon I will replace with wire when the time comes.

So I recommend wire/rope repllacement like what you already have. Granted a lot of people here use Spectra in larger sizes than mine and you could give it a try. olewill

The only place on a boat for 3 strand is on the anchor rode. For use as halyards or sheets it's only good for those who want to be always tweaking the lines up. Boat performance wise there is no positive only negative.

With all due respect I'm slightly agasp that anyone would still consider it these days. It's very very old school now. Even wire is going the way of the Dodo so fast it also will be the thing of memories soon.

Bog standard polyester double braid is a minimum. It will stretch a bit at the start but after a while it will settle and stretch less. The nature of the beast means there will always be stretch but nothing like 3 strand.

Don't know what William H has but I suspect an earlier grade of Spectra if he is having stretch issues. Probably a SK60 and he is getting the 'creep' that Spectra has. It's only small but can be quite annoying. SK60 is going the way of the Dodo also and most on the market now is SK75. 75 is stronger hence the creep, while still there, only pops up under increased loads.

I would seriously suggest more thought on using 3 strand though. Even if you have to get someone to splice the braid I'm sure you will be a lot happier with the finish rope when using it.

Not likely - tangles too easily. That's what multiplait is for. Save the three strand for long coils to use as added length for special occasions when the usual warps or anchor rode aren't long enough.

On a racer Tangomoon's size I'd be looking at wire for the halliards. That'l be a long mast and any stretch will be x% of a lot.

Stop buying it on price alone then /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Yes a nice multiplait is better though.
