Why is it so difficult to practically give away a sailing dinghy?

A few weeks ago I dropped the price of my 1936 Sharpie to £400 just to get rid of it. Lots of interest on phone and email but everyone just wastes my time. Only one person has come to see it and I could tell as she walked down the path that she was just out for a day trip.

I'm getting to the stage of breaking the thing up and using the wood and rigging on my Pinnace, but what a waste. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Snap! I am trying to sell my 1917 gaff ketch, and I've had lots of 'tyre-kickers' but only one bloke who really wanted to buy it but had no money. He's gone home to sell some real estate so that he can buy my boat. This is shaping up to be a saga. I really understand what you are saying.
Peter.

Unless I'm horribly mistaken, wasn't the programme run again on Discovery Realtime last night? Couldn't you get the continuity announcer to plug the sale next time they run it? (worth a try!). You could even sell a video with it...

Forbsie - if only my kids were a wee bit older... do you have a trailer for her, or is she without wheels?

Shuggy

I know the feeling. I did sell my Heron for £700.
But all the people who were after her were just looking for a dinghy, a grp one would have suited better. I bought it back from the guy who did buy it. He hadn't appreciated that a 50 year old wooden boat wasn't as tough as a modern grp dinghy.
I'd rather hang on to her and sail her every now and then.

No trailer - it's been on Eel Pie Island for 50 years since moving from Chichester.

Funnily enough, an Aussie guy started chatting to me in Machine Mart yesterday and then said "Hang on, didn't I see you on tv last night?" The price of fame. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Classic!

If I knew what to do with it, I'd buy it today. Emotion rather than sense tho.

If you want to bring it around to my house this weekend I may be interested. or not.

Nice looking boat, be a shame to cut her up.

My parents donated my old dinghy to the local Sea Scouts. Is that a possibility here? They usually have enough enthusiasts available to do the maintenance, and the old girl would probably appreciate being part of bringing up the next generation of sailors.
