Sorry to be a nuisance, but I have another problem for you wise ones to solve.

My Friends boat has been stood on hard standing for two years with the legs down,we are preping it to hopefully get it back in the water next week.He had the legs serviced last year and all the bellows changed, but never bothered to put it back in the water.

We have connected the battery's up, that where fully charged and tried out all the systems everything seemed OK, except a problem with the starboard leg trim, we trimmed it up into the beach position and all seemed OK,then we lowered it back down to trim -5, but then you could still hear the trim motor working away even though we had took our finger of the button and the leg was fully down,We had to turn the engine power isolator off to stop it from continuing, does anyone know were to start,is it likely to be a stuck power trim button or is there a relay or solenoid on the pump itself that might be suspect, anyone have any suggestions were we start to look.

The boat has not been used much due to his work commitments,it is 5 years old and only done 45 hours,I've explained to him that the worst thing you can do is to leave them stood, better to use it regular and keep it well serviced.

Both! there are two relays (up and down) on the trim pump, so you could try unplugging one to see if the fault is there, or the trim butoon could be stuck.

Cheers,I will give it a try,are the buttons in a sealed unit or can you get inside it to spray some electrical spray.

I have had the same fault before with the black rectangular ones with up down and a red beach button. If it is this type then it is also easy to swap the plugs over and test. As spanner man said it could be a stuck relay. You will need to swap the plugs over on the two relays mounted on the pump. If the leg goes all the way up on it's own then it's the relay. Just disconecting either relay will stop the pump working in both directions.

As already mentioned, there are 2 relays next to the pump. They can easily be removed from their plastic socket, do one at a time and spray electrical cleaner type spray or WD40 into the socket. Check the terminals on the relay, clean if required. Refit the relay and check operation of out drive. Even if it is working OK still clean the other relay terminals. Whilst you are there check all of the electrical plugs/sockets. That usually sorts out the outdrive problem but I did say usually.

If you remove both relays at the same time you will never know which is the problem one for future reference. There are 2 more relays normally situated behind the dash but they don't normally give a problem - touch wood.

Let us know how you get on, hopefully OK but if needed we will go to the next steps.

yep, sounds like the relay has stuck after not having much use. Of the two relays there, they both connect the motor to earth, until one is activated and provides power, hence needing both relays in situ for the system to work. (As there are only two wires to the motor, the switching is done via the relays). Easy to identify, should be bolted next to the pump unit, on the metal bracket. The one with the blue wires is up (blue-sky) and the green wires are for down (green-grass).

much more likely to be a stuck or faulty relay than the switch, they normally pack up altogether.

Hope this helps. Si

Went to the boat today and removed the relays, gave them a clean and a squirt with some electronic oil and put them back on the pump, everything seems to be working fine now, thanks everybody for the info.
