not quite in the same league, but I had three self inflating lifejackets in a lazarette which got flooded but only one went off. I also tested a fire extinguisher to show actually what it would be like - and it didn't go off either.
work by excluding oxygen from the vicinity of the fire. In an enclosed space like an engine room or possibly a small saloon they can work quite well. On deck - forget it. On our outdoor firefighting courses the biggest man was usually selected to extinguish an oil fire with a CO2 extinguisher. If it was windy he inevitably failed, emptying the extinguisher in the process. The smallest woman was then given a BCF extinguisher and usually one squirt was enough. Corny but fun.
