Hi all,

Sorry I have not been around for a bit but I do read the Forums. Can I please ask some advice?

A while ago I nearly bought a freeman 22 on the Thames but my now long term (Yippee) SWMBO was not too taken. Anyway life has settled down and I think it is time to take the plunge. I need a two berth, sporty reliable boat. Mainly for use on Thames (both Tidal and non-tidal) and which I can get trailed down to South Coast for hollidays. [I have also passed my driving test. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif]

Anyway I saw This on Ebay and it got me thinking. The boat is spot on what I need, shame about the engine. Anyway with a bit of research I can get Coastal Rides to sort out a new engine and drive of either a Petrol (gulp) 4.3GXI with DP for £6400 or a Diesel (yippee) D3 160Hp with DP for £8250.

I think this would be great as I would have a good boat (I think) with a new and reliable engine. On a resale front they seem to bring £10-£15k dependent upon engine and condition.

So do you think it is a sensible project (I will outsource all work) and if so do I go Petrol, or Diesel and how much is the old girl worth in current condition.

Thanks again all

Hello Mr T,

You might find a better value boat which has a sound engine for less, there are also boats with better accomodation in that size/price band. Someone will probably link to half a dozen likely suspects on boats and outboards or similar...

Ah aye, bear in mind towing weight too.

Cheers

Hi Mr Tumble

I thought you bought an inflatable with engine? Having not heard off you for so long I thought you had been swept out to sea! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

On that boat front I think it has potential and I would go for the Diesel as it will give better range in the long run and be more economical (less often to fill up)

I would not pay more than £2500 for the boat, trailer and Engine bits!

Cheers and welcome back

its nice boat, but unless your very handy with spanners its going to cost
the engines are plus vat and labour, for diesel might be more economical to change the tank. and for volvo there will be serious grp work todo to accomadate the diffent transom shields, you could be in for another 4k on top, easily
also it may not fit as the D engines are quite tall
good luck

cant see his re-fitted prices being in the least realistic for a 15year old sportsboat. I d also look to reselling.. how many people are looking for this? Unless you do alot of 25knt crusing each year, I'd go for the petrol engine. Its lighter and cheaper and when red diesel goes, I doubt people are going to stump up the current diesel engine premium on a small boat.
My suspicion is that when we get to lower priced boats, its the capital outlay that matters (ie the cost of the thing!), not its running costs.
