Porthole seals

Hi All
Anyone know of a supp;ier of the "o" ring seals for portholes ?? The ones concerned are brass of unknown make . /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I can't help you with a supplier, but I made my own up by carefully cutting some suitably thick rubber with a craftknife so that it was a tight push fit into the groove in the porthole. I scarfed the ends to prevent any leaks. Didn't need any glue or masticky stuff.

It will almost certainly be a standard size. If you Googlke O rings you will be spoilt for choice for on line catalogues.

Try a builders / plumbers merchant . You want the o rings they use on Hepworth Hep-Seal pot type 5 / 6 ins drains, I think they still do them you may have to cut and join them with super glue, it does work.

We do not use rubber any more.
We use expanded neoprene, 6mm round. Put the join at the top.
Requires much less pressure to get a seal.

Whenever I have needed O-rings, I have bought them from industrial bearing suppliers. They also stock the circular-section O-ring neoprene in long lengths and various section diameters for non-standard seals, such as Honda motor-cycle gaskets. It is easy to join the two ends with Super-glue. I'd still put the joint at the top of the groove.

Beats my old fashioned method although it may be a bit more expensive. The last time I bought the Hepworth ones they where 20p per O ring, it was some time ago.

I just rejuvenated the old by putting a smear of silicone instant gasket onto the rubber, and a trace of vaseline round the port to stop it sticking, and then closed but didn't tighten until set.
